Kaiserslautern is named after Frederick Barbarossa, the Holy Roman Emperor who ruled the Holy Roman Empire between 1155 and 1190. As a result of the small river Lauter, the old section of Kaiserslautern was an island in medieval times. In front of the Rathaus (city hall), you can still see the ruins of Frederick’s original castle, built between 1152 and 1160. Landstuhl’s western approach was guarded by Nanstein Castle, a second castle built there. Today, Kaiserslautern is still known as “Barbarossa city,” and its coat of arms features an open-mouthed pike, one of Barbarossa’s favorite dishes.

Kaiserslautern’s oldest church, the Stiftkirche, was built between 1250 and 1350. In 1276, King Rudolf von Habsburg chartered Kaiserslautern as an imperial city as its population grew. A monastic order built St. Martin’s Kirche (church) between 1300 and 1350. A section of the original city wall in the church courtyard can still be seen today.

The city of Kaiserslautern became part of the Wittelsbach inheritance after 1375 when it was pledged to Electoral Palatinate.
