The city of Kalamariá, located in the Thessaloniki Prefecture, is among the most densely populated suburbs in Greece. It’s about 7kms from downtown Thessaloniki and has a population of 91k. Kalamaria also has a university that’s well known for its construction department.
Archaeological records show that the Mikro Emvolo cape has been inhabited for a long time by humans. Records from the first settlement found around here date back to prehistoric times.
Kalamaria is a small town in central Greece with a claim to fame: it’s the birthplace of the present-day namesake Kalamaria. The area was first inhabited in 1083 and has been an important part of Greek history ever since, being heavily influenced by the Byzantine & Ottoman empires.
The first refugee settlement in Asia Minor was established in the early 1920s to house refugees who were displaced as a result of the Greek-Turkish War. As many as 100,000 refugees relocated to Thessaloniki primarily due to the violence and the lack of opportunities for jobs in Asia Minor and East Thrace. They are mostly settling in Kalamaria.

In 1931, a violent anti-Semitic riot in Kalamaria left 500 families homeless, one Jewish resident dead, and the city of Athens on fire.
Kalamaria is becoming more and more popular as people move in from rural to suburban areas. Between the censuses of 1981 and 2001, it grew by about 36,000 people. Kalamaria was a district of the Municipality of Thessaloniki until 1943. Until that year, it was not independent of the municipality, but after the Nazi occupation in February and April 1942, Kalamaria became an autonomous administrative unit.
It is hot in Kalamariá during the summer, with the average temperature ranging from 35°F to 90°F. During the winter, the weather is cooler and partly dry, with temperatures typically falling from 26°F to 96°F. The best time to visit Kalamariá is from mid-June to early September.
The main roads that feed into the municipality are those of Konstantinos Karamanlis Avenue (formerly Nea Egnatia) to the east (which links with the A25 (the Thessaloniki-Chalkidiki motorway)), Taki Ekonomidi Avenue (which links the popular district of Nea Krini with Thessaloniki’s city center), Megalou Alexandrou Avenue – the biggest avenue in Thessaloniki and the EO16 which provides the main access from Kalamaria to the airport and the outer south-eastern suburbs of Thessaloniki. Other main road links exist with Thermi, while the southeast end of the Thessaloniki ring road is southwest of Kalamaria.
The defenses built today have their roots in the Byzantine period at the end of the 4th century AD, and their measurements ranged from eight kilometers long, to ten meters high and were approximately five meters thick at some points.
A science museum near a mall in Kalamaria was renovated in 1998. Some of the features of the new building include a theatre, one with 300 seats and a 100-foot screen. It’s also one of the largest screens in Greece.
The waterfront walk from Thessaloniki Concert Hall to the White Tower in Kalamaria is magical – a long-term project that ended in 2013. It links 12 parks along the water and ends with a scenic view of Nea Paralia.
Hagios Demetrios is one of the oldest churches in a city called Thessaloniki which has been around since the 7th century. Many amazing mosaic panels have to be seen in action to believe, depicting our patron saint, Demetrius with children and many people from throughout Greek and Byzantine history.

Emperor Galerius commissioned two imperial monuments in a new imperial precinct at the beginning of the 4th century. One was the Arch of Galerius, built in 303 AD, and represents his victory over Sassanid Persians. The other one was known as the Arch of Septimius Severus built in 208 AD and celebrated his victory over Parthian Persians.
The construction of Thessaloniki’s Concert Hall, made up of two separate buildings, started a transformation on the waterfront in Kalamaria.
The Art Nouveau Villa Modiano is a front of the Nea Paralia. It was constructed in 1906 with loggia overlooking the sea and contrasting with the high-rise apartment blocks beside it.
This museum is a treasure trove of photography, with records going back as far as 1840. It provides an exciting look into the transition that photography went through over time. The collection focuses on the work of photographers active in Greece during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Photographers like PDM, Kersis, Yiannis Moraitis, and Zea are some of the artists featured.
A few miles east of Kalamaria is a reservoir called Vathilakos Dam. The reservoir was created in 1993 and split into two parts! It has winding paved paths on its banks, both with pine and cypress-covered shores.
This mall opened in Kalamaria in 2005 and boasts to be one of the largest shopping centers in southeastern Europe. It features over 70 brands, including Mango, H&M, Sephora, and Lacoste.
On the other side of Thessaloniki Airport, Waterland provides both younger and older kids and teenagers with a range of thrilling rides and activities. This waterpark has been around for a while and will make everyone enjoy their time no matter their age.
