Kalisz Overview

With 97,905 residents (December 2021), Kalisz is the second-largest city in the Greater Poland Voivodeship. A town in the Kalisz Region, it is the capital. Located on the Prosna River in southeastern Greater Poland, Ostrów Wielkopolski and Nowe Skalmierzyce form a conurbation with the city.

Kalisz is one of the oldest cities in Poland and one of the two traditional capitals of Greater Poland (with Poznań). As a provincial capital and famous royal city, it has been an important regional center in Poland since the Middle Ages. Several significant events in Polish history have occurred at the site, including burials of medieval Polish monarchs and dukes of the Piast dynasty. An industrial district has existed here since the 19th century. As the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kalisz, it is the cultural, scientific, educational, and administrative center of eastern and southern Greater Poland.

History

In the area of Kalisz, there are numerous Roman artifacts, indicating that the settlement was once a stop on the Amber Trail for Roman caravans heading for the Baltic Sea. Ptolemy mentioned Calisia in the 2nd century A.D., but some historians doubt the connection, saying that the location was in Magna Germania on the territory of the Diduni.

During the Piast dynasty, archaeological excavations uncovered a settlement dating to the 9th-12th century. It is most likely that modern Kalisz was founded as a little fort and the provincial capital in the 9th century. Having formed part of Greater Poland since the country’s establishment in the 10th century, the town has been part of Poland ever since.

The town was captured by Boleslaw III Wrymouth in 1106 and became a part of his feudal domain. Between 1253 and 1260, a local variation of the Magdeburg Law called the Roda-like Law was passed, incorporating it according to the German town law. The town formed a separate duchy governed by a local branch of the Piast dynasty during the feudal fragmentation of Poland.

During the year 1264, Boleslau the Pious issued the Kalisz Statute. During the persecution of Jews in Western Europe, a unique privilege made Poland the destination of Jewish migration from other countries. As a result of Poland’s reunification, the town became a center for weaving and wood products and a cultural center.

It was proclaimed the capital of the Kalisz Voivodeship by King Ladislaus the Short in 1314 after its laws were confirmed by Przemys II of Poland in 1282. Kalisz was one of Poland’s most important trade centers (according to its borders at that time). When the Teutonic Knights attacked the city in 1331, the Poles defended it successfully. In 1343, King Casimir III the Great signed a peace treaty with the Teutonic Order there due to its strategic location. As a royal city, Kalisz was able to defend many of its initial privileges, and a new town hall was built in 1426. Kalisz is the burial place of Polish Duke Mieszko III the Old. Jews in the town were attacked during epidemics by mobs who accused them of poisoning their wells in the 14th century.
