Kallithea Overview

Kallithea is the name of a district in Athens and one of its most populous neighborhoods. It is also part of the municipality which lies south of the city, making it one of Athens’ biggest municipalities. It has an area of 16 km2 and a population that exceeds 135,000 residents. In total, Meteora has about 5,000 inhabitants and is the second most densely populated municipality in Greece. It covers an area of 4.749 km2 (1.834 sq mi).

Location

Kallithea (Davaki) is approximately 3 km away from Athens’ city center and lies to the northeast of Piraeus. It measures 3 km by 2 miles at a distance of 2 miles. Kallithea is located at the Filopappou and Sikelia hills and stretches to Phaleron Bay. It also includes Syngrou Avenue and the Ilisos River.

The site on which the city was developed is in the southernmost part of Athens, with the Long Walls and Phalerum Wall crisscrossing to prevent invaders from entering. This ancient town was mentioned by Plato in his Dialogues.

Population

100,641 inhabitants, 2011 census

Climate

From what I’ve seen, Kallithea gets the worse of it when it comes to rain. The amount that falls in the winter is quite large and dries out quickly after rainfall. This makes for a good time to keep your outdoor furniture in good shape. Kallithea is located in Attica, Greece. The climate here is classified as Csa which means it never has less than 17.5 degrees Celsius or 63.6 Fahrenheit degrees on average during the year, and the annual rainfall is around 378 millimeters or 14.9 inches at this time of year.

Culture

The city of the first name, South Kallithea, is commonly associated with the genre of Greek folk music. The most significant event during this period was the rise of rebetiko and later laïkó. Popular composers and singers once performed here; Markos Vamvakaris, Vassilis Tsitsanis, Yannis Papaioannou, Marika Ninou, Sotiria Bellou, Manolis Chiotis, Mary Linda, and Giorgos Zampetas.

Education

Kallithea is home to two prominent universities: Harokopion University and Panteion University. More importantly, it is the home of the oldest technical school in Greece–Sivitanidios School.

Sports

Until 2004, Tzitzifies was the only horse competition track in Greece, but it moved to Markopoulon, near Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport. Kallithea is home to several cultural institutions and sports clubs, most notably Kallithea FC (soccer), Esperos (basketball, volleyball, handball, and also soccer in an earlier period), and Ikaros Kallitheas. Kallithea is a large club and has had many teams. The club made changes in 1991 with one of its clubs, Esperides Kallithea. This merge continues to the present day with Kallithea’s newest team: Ikaros Kallithea.

Transportation

One of the main roads in Kallithea is Andrea Syngrou Avenue, which goes to the eastern part of Athens, and Poseidonos Avenue which goes towards Piraeus. Kallithea is a dynamic growth area with access to many public transportation options. You can reach the area from nearby stations, buses & trolley buses, or via Metro Line 1 which leaves from the two most central stations in Athens.

  12. Odeon of Herodes Atticus

    – On the southwest slope of the Acropolis is a Roman-era setting for music performances. They were commissioned by the Athenian magnate Herodes Atticus in the middle of the 2nd century AD.
