Kamnik Overview
Kamnik is a town in northern Slovenia, the central settlement of the Municipality of Kamnik. It encompasses a large part of the Kamnik Alps and the surrounding area. The city has many examples of historical architecture and three castles.
History
The name Kamnik first appeared in the 11th century. It was first noted as a town when it was mentioned as an essential trading post on the road between Ljubljana and Celje in 1229. This makes the city one of the oldest in Slovenia. In the Middle Ages, Kamnik had its mint and some aristocratic families among its residents. The town was among the most influential centers of power for the Bavarian counts of Andechs in Slovenia. The only relics of Bavarian nobility nowadays are two old castles on high ground and near the town. The Franciscan monastery built in the city is a testament to its importance and should not be overlooked by visitors. The building is well-preserved and has undergone extensive renovation in recent years.
Historical suburbs of town include Šut(i)na (German: Schutt), Na Produ (Slovene: Na produ), Novi Trg (Novi trg, German: Neumarkt), Pred Mostom (Pred most, German: Vor der Brücke), Graben, and Podgorica. In 1934 the following Kamnik annexed formerly independent settlements: Fužine (German: Fuschine), Žale (in older sources also Žalje, German: Wallenberg), Zaprice (German: Steinbüchel), Kratno, Pulled, Zgornje Perovo (German: Oberperau), Spodnje Perovo (German: Unterperau), Bakovnik, and the lower part of Mekinje.
The old town center is primarily built in an Austro-Hungarian style. Most facades have been renewed recently, but this process is still ongoing.
