Karlsruhe Overview
Karlsruhe is a city in southwestern Germany. Housed in a former weapons factory, the vast ZKM Center for Art and Media includes video, audio, and interactive installations as well as museum-grade archives of artwork. In the city center of Karlsruhe, the tower of the 18th-century palace offers a view of its fan-shaped layout. The palace houses the Baden State Museum which provides visitors with exhibits from prehistory to the present.
Geography
Karlsruhe is situated southeast of the river Rhine and is surrounded by densely forested hills. The Turmberg dominates the skyline on the east side of the city, while north of it lies the Kraichgau region that culminates in Germany’s darkest woodlands.
The Rhine is one of the world’s busiest shipping routes. It borders Mainz on the North, Wörth is Rhein on the South, and the city limits of Mainz to the West. The city center is about 7.5 km (4.7 mi) away from the Rhine, as measured from the Marktplatz (Market Square). The two tributaries of the river, Alb and Pfinz, flow through the city to eventually meet up with it.
The city of Deutschland lies at an altitude between 100 and 322 meters near the communications tower in the suburb of Grünwettersbach. Its geographical coordinates are at 49°00′N 8°24′E, making it almost the same latitude as much of the Canada-United States border. The city center is at 49°N, which is equivalent to 8°E. Its course is marked by a black and white striped stone as you enter it on the Stadtgarten. The total area of the city is 173.46 square kilometers (66.97 square miles). This makes it the 30th largest in Germany, which means that they are a large city after all! The distance between two points in a North-South direction is 16.8 km and 19.3 km, while the distance in an East-West direction is 19.3 km.
Climate
Karlsruhe has an oceanic climate that is milder than in most of the German nations, except for the Rhine-Ruhr area. Summers are also very warm and they provide plenty of sunshine. The weather station in Karlsruhe had been running since 1876, and it was no longer profitable. That’s why they closed and replaced it with a new one south of the original in Rheinstetten.
History
When the Margrave of Baden-Durlach first laid eyes on a beautiful forest clearing in Germany, he knew he had found the perfect place to build his new capital. This city is known as Karlsruhe now and it stands for “Charles’ repose” or “Charles’ peace.” The story of how he built the new palace to find peace from his wife is popular among his followers.
Charles William, who founded the city of Karlsruhe on June 17, 1715, had a dispute with citizens over Durlach and relocated to the present location. The construction of the palace is closely linked to his migration from Durlach. Karlsruhe became the capital of Baden-Durlach and, in 1771, of the united Baden until 1945. Built in 1822, the Ständehaus was the first parliament building in a German state. In the aftermath of the democratic revolution of 1848, a republic was established and held its first parliamentary session there.
The city of Karlsruhe (Germany) was visited by American diplomat Thomas Jefferson during his time as the American envoy to France in 1793. When Pierre Charles L’Enfant was planning the layout of Washington, D.C., he used maps of European towns that were sent to him by Mr. Jefferson including a sketch from Karlsruhe!
The first-ever international professional convention of chemists was held in 1862, in Karlsruhe, Germany.
In 1907 the town was the site of the Hau Riot where large crowds caused a disturbance during the trial of murderer Carl Hau.
During the Holocaust, on Kristallnacht in 1938, the Adass Jeshurun synagogue was burned to the ground, and the city’s Jews were later sent to Dachau concentration camp, Gurs concentration camp, Theresienstadt, and Auschwitz, with 1,421 of Karlsruhe’s Jews being killed.
Much of the central area, including the palace, was reduced to rubble by Allied bombing during World War II but was rebuilt after the war. Located in the American zone of the postwar Allied occupation, Karlsruhe was home to an American military base, established in 1945. In 1995, the bases closed, and their facilities were turned over to the city of Karlsruhe.

Karlsruhe is the seat of the highest court in Germany, the Bundesverfassungsgericht. They are responsible for civil and criminal cases, classifying them together because these two areas often intertwine in German law. In 1945, the countries of Württemberg and Baden were merged into one. The country became known as Württemberg-Baden and then in 1952, it was changed to Baden-Württemberg. Because their state authority moved to Stuttgart, Karlsruhe decided to apply and become the seat of one of the higher courts.

There are four hospitals in Karlsruhe: The municipal Klinikum Karlsruhe provides the maximum level of medical services, the St. Vincentius-Kliniken and the Diakonissenkrankenhaus, connected to the Catholic and Protestant churches provide social care. Germany’s biggest electric utility company, EnBW, has its headquarters in Frankfurt am Main. It had a revenue of 19.2 billion Euros in 2012.

Karlsruhe was known as the internet capital of Germany before Frankfurt was built in 1991. Since then, though, Karlsruhe has fallen behind.
Two major internet service providers, WEB.DE and schlund+partner/1 and 1 now both owned by one company, UNET-2KG-Einheiten GmbH, are at the Karlsruhe site.
Programmers from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology developed a website called the “Karlsruher Virtueller Katalog” which allowed researchers from all over the world to search multiple library catalogs on their computers. Anyone in a library could log into the site and conduct their searches there. In the year 2000 online newspaper ka-news.de was created to provide local, and regional information for people in Karlsruhe and bordering areas. Events
In July, there is a large cultural festival called “Das Fest” that takes place over three days. One of the oldest and most prestigious events in Baden-Württemberg, the Händel Festival has been sponsored by the Baden State Theatre since 1978.
The city hosted the 23rd and 31st European Juggling Conventions in 2000 and 2008.
In July the African Summer Festival is held in the northern district of the city with markets, workshops, exhibitions, and other different things for children.
