Kassel Overview

Kassel, Germany is home to the annual Documenta art exhibition. Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, a sprawling park dating back to the 18th century and home to Wilhelmshöhe Palace and the Old Masters Picture Gallery, offers a perfect landscape for your outing. Herkules Monument offers city views from atop the baroque water features, which cascade down a hill.

History

Kassel was first mentioned as Chasella in 913 AD and is a resort city on the Germany-Denmark border at a bridge crossing the Fulda River between two countries. It’s not yet proven that it was originally fortification of any kind, but rather an indication of occupation. It could be derived from an ancient castle in Castellum Cattorum, founded by the Germanic tribe of Chattia. The Romans settled in the area before Castellum was built and Battle River ran through where it stood today. Another option is a portmanteau of Frankonian “cas,” meaning valley or recess, and “sali” meaning hall or service building. The interpretation of the two words together can be interpreted as “town hall in a valley.”

The historical documentation that mentions Cassel is from 1189, but it’s been impossible to determine exactly when the city rights might have been granted.

The Landgraviate of Hesse was divided in 1567 and one of the states, Hesse-Kassel, became a center of Calvinist Protestantism. Kassel was the capital and has since remained one of Germany’s most important towns. Early on, Protestants built reinforced fortifications to guard against Catholic attacks. They also created secret societies, including Rosicrucianism and the work of Christian Rosenkreutz, who published Fama Fraternities in 1617. Kassel became a refuge for 1,700 Huguenots in 1685. Landgrave Charles had ordered the construction of the Oktogon (Hercules monument) as a result of this humanitarian act. In the late 18th Century, Hesse-Kassel became infamous for selling mercenaries (Hessians) to the British crown to help suppress the American Revolution and to finance the construction of palaces and landgraves’ opulent lifestyle.

The Brothers Grimm lived in Kassel from roughly 1803 – 1812. During this time, the Landgraviate was chosen as a principality which meant that it gained independence from the Holy Roman Empire and its ruler would become King of Bavaria. It was first annexed by Napoleon in 1806 and then became the capital for the short-lived Kingdom of Westphalia under his brother Jérôme. The Electorate was restored in 1813.

Economy

Companies like Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz, SMA, and Wintershall are located in the city. Some companies have factories while others have headquarters. There are still many other international companies operating in the city as well such as Krauss-Maffei Wegmann, Rheinmetall, and Bombardier among others. Home to multiple hospitals, the city of Kassel is a booming hub for medical specialists. One of the largest and most renowned hospitals in all of Kassel is the Klinikum Kassel, which only offers quality services.

Geography

Kassel is the largest city in Germany and is located in Hesse. It’s about 70 km away from Germany’s central point. It is located in the northeastern Fulda valley. The deepest point of Kassel is at 132.9 m above sea level on the northeast peak.

There are 23 districts in the city of Kassel each with a local mayor. They exist to represent the people and help set their goals within each district. These districts are then elected by the inhabitants every 5 years. The local advisory board can provide input, but ultimately the final decision rests with the city council.

Culture

The Luxembourg observatory has built a copy of its celebrated forefather, the first German observatory from 1558. It was rebuilt in 1714 and survives as the Bellevue Palace now. The old building is referred to as the Ottoneum, and it was built in 1604. It is today known as the Natural History Museum, and the now-called Staatstheater Kassel is located in a nearby building that was constructed in the 1950s. Home to one of the most important music publishers worldwide, Kassel has been around since 1927.

Since 1955, the Documenta has been held every five years. The most recent exhibition, Documenta 14 is being held from June to September, 20. As a result of Document 6 (1977), Kassel became the first town in the world to be illuminated by laser beams at night. Train fans can still see this laser installation on the weekends, now an outdoor attraction. Other Documenta relics from the show can be found in many places in Kassel. The “7000 Oaks” sculpture by Joseph Beuys is one of many. The city currently has many art pieces from past Documenta exhibitions. They are set to construct a “Documenta Institute” that will be connected to the university.

Climate

Kassel has an oceanic climate (Köppen: Cfb) but it is not too far from marine climates, with a more notable continental influence than Berlin. Using 1961-1990 normal and 0 °C isotherms, the city already had a humid continental climate (Dfb).

Population

201,585 (2019)

Sights

The 1943 bombings destroyed so much of the city and 90% of it was rebuilt during the 1950s. It is a combination of renovated or reconstructed old buildings along with new architecture introduced in the 1950s. Outside the city center, suburbs and towns are common. The oldest monument in Essen is the Druselturm, which is some 700 years old. The Brüderkirche and the Martinskirche are also built from medieval times up to about the 19th century.

Sports

Hessen Kassel has been playing in the Hessenliga since the 2017/2018 season after being relegated from the Regionalliga. They’ve made a huge comeback, with great donation rates and matches attended by more supporters than any other club from their region before. The city’s football stadium, Auestadion was built in 1953 and can hold 18,737 people. It is located near Karlsaue and south of Kassel, next to the quarter of Südstadt.

Kassel has a long ice hockey tradition, but it was not until 1977 that the Kassel ice rink (Eissporthalle) opened on a private initiative. The Kassel Huskies were founders of DEL in 1994, belonging to it from 1994-2006 and again since 2017. In 1997, the Huskies were runner-up in the Championship playoffs. They reached the semifinals on three more occasions and were dissolved in 2010. Young Huskies decided to enter a men’s team in the Hessenliga and will be playing in the 5th division of men’s hockey. This league is the lowest in Germany, and they’ve been practicing hard! When the Hessenliga club put an updated roster on social media, they weren’t expecting that number of football supporters to be at the stadium opening, but over 5,000 turn up.

Transport

Kassel has seven tram lines, some coming up to 15 of them whilst others making the rounds at 18 minutes. It also operates a light rail called RegioTram which uses low-floor Citadis trams on both mainline railways and tram tracks. Besides Kassel’s low-floor buses, several regular buses complete the public transport in this city. The introduction of these buses led to the development of the Kassel kerb which helps improve accessibility at bus stops.

There are two stations in the city: Kassel Central and Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe. They’re both connected to the national rail network so it’s just wherever you need to go – whether that’s even a station or not! Since the opening of the Hanover-Würzburg high-speed rail line over 20 years ago, the traditional central station (Hauptbahnhof) has been relegated to being a regional station. The ICE and other trains call at Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe station as well as Flixtrain and Nightjet.

Kassel is connected to motorways A 7, A 49, and A 44.

The city is served by Kassel Calden Airport.
