Kaunas is a city in south-central Lithuania. It’s near the confluence of the Neris and Nemunas rivers, housing historical exhibitions at Kaunas Castle. To the east, the old town is home to the Kaunas Cathedral Basilica, with its ornate interior and Gothic spires. Laisvės Alėja, a pedestrianized street lined with trees and cafes, crosses the city from west to east.
The city’s name is of Lithuanian origin and most likely derives from a personal name – for example, Tauragn meaning “bull mountain.”
Before Lithuania regained independence, the city was generally known in English as Kovno. The Polish name is Kowno; the Belarusian name is Koўна or Kowna. Kovno was an early Russian name for the city though Kaunas has been used since 1940. The Yiddish name is Kovne, and in German, it is usually referred to as Kaunas or Kauen. The city and the elders are also known under different names in other languages (See Names of Kaunas in other languages, see Names of Kaunas elders in other languages).
A legend from the 16th century claims that Kaunas was established by the Romans in ancient times. These Romans were supposedly led by a patrician called Palemon, who had three sons: Barcus, Kunas, and Spertus. Palemon left Rome for Lithuania because he was afraid of Emperor Nero and his madness. Palemon, along with his sons and other relatives, traveled to Lithuania. After Palemon died, his sons divided up the land; Kunas got Kaunas as a result. He was near the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers and built a fortress there. The city that grew up around it was named after him – the Palemonas region, which is nearby.
Archeological excavations at the confluence of the Nemunas and the Neris rivers have found that the most prestigious ceramic collections of this period were from 2,000 years ago. During that period, people settled in some territories of present-day Kaunas: at the confluence of the two longest rivers of the Lithuania area, Eiguliai, Lampėdžiai, Linkuva, Kaniūkai, Marvelė, Pajiesys, and Romania sites.
The coat of arms in the old historical city of Kaunas is made up of an auroch, with a golden cross set between its horns. This design is against a red background and was adopted by the Presidential decree on 30 June 1993. The aurochs is the heraldic symbol of Kaunas. It was established in 1400 and has been used on the city’s seal since 1413, during the reign of Grand Duke Vytautas. The historical seal dates back to about 1430. The current Lithuanian coat of arms is the result of much deliberation by the Lithuanian Heraldry Commission and was realized by artist Raimondas Miknevičius. The auroch is replacing a wisent which had been in the Soviet-era coat of arms.
The city covers 15,700 hectares. Parks, forests, and other green areas count for 8,329 hectares while agricultural areas make up the remaining 7,365 hectares. The type of terrain matches that of the country and is mostly lowlands.
Kaunas has a humid continental climate (Köppen Dfb). The average annual temperature here is about 7 °C (45 °F).
The climate in Kaunas is relatively mild when compared with other locations at similar latitudes due to the proximity of the Baltic Sea. It generally has around 17 hours of sun all year round, ensuring a longer day in summer and shorter days in winter. The Kazlų Rūda Forest, west of Kaunas, creates a microclimate around the city which regulates humidity and temperature. It shields it from strong winds coming in from the West.
Summers in Kaunas are warm and pleasant with an average high of 21-22 degrees Celsius and lows of approximately 12 degrees Celsius, but temperatures could reach 30 degrees Celsius on some days. Winters are usually cold with average temperatures ranging from −8 to 0 °C (18 to 32 °F) and rarely drop below −15 °C (5 °F). Spring and autumn are generally cool to mild, but can occasionally be warm.
The old town of Kaunas, which is close to the Nemunas and Neris rivers, contains many historic monuments and buildings. This is the Eastern side of the city, called the New Town. The Old Town and New Town have been two parts of Warsaw that were built at separate times in history. The Old Town was established before 1847 while the New Town started developing in 1847 and got its name when it became a distinct part of the city. Central Kaunas is defined by two pedestrian streets: the 2-km-long Laisvės alėja (Liberty Avenue), a central street of the city, lined by linden trees and decorated with flower beds.
Kaunas Mint was a coin producer for the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, where it was active during the reign of John II Casimir Vasa. It produced coins from 17 October 1665 to 15 January 1667. During the interwar period between Poland and Lithuania, another Kaunas Mint was established in 1936 producing coins of the Republic of Lithuania.
