A border fortress owned by a minor Piast family member was first mentioned in 1104 when the Přemyslid prince Svatopluk of Olomouc besieged it. Since 1138, the Kole castellany has been part of the Polish Duchy of Silesia, and since 1172/73, it has been part of the Upper Silesian Duchy of Racibórz. The property was inherited by Duke Casimir of Bytom in 1281, who also called himself Duke of Koźle. He soon turned to the neighboring Kingdom of Bohemia, paying homage to King Wenceslaus II and receiving the duchy as a Bohemian fief in 1289. He built walls around Ko_le in 1293 and granted the town’s town privileges. When Casimir was succeeded by his son Wladyslaw in 1312, Kole remained the capital of an autonomous duchy, ruled by the Bytom Branch of the Silesian Piasts, until Duke Boleslaw died in 1355. After King Charles IV reverted the Bohemian fief to Konrad I of Olenica (Oels), the town remained in the Olenicca family until 1492, when it expired.

In 1509, Jan II the Good again acquired the Kole estates in Opole, which were eventually incorporated into the Bohemian Crown Lands after he died in 1532. Hohenzollern Margraves of Brandenburg-Ansbach temporarily pawned it within the Habsburg monarchy. Danish troops under the command of Duke John Ernest I of Saxe-Weimar occupied the fortress several times during the Thirty Years’ War. Still, they were defeated by Imperial forces under Albrecht von Wallenstein in 1627. In 1642, a Swedish contingent led by Lennart Torstensson again conquered the town, which remained almost destroyed. Under the House of Vasa, it was returned to Polish rule in 1645.

By the 1742 Treaty of Breslau, Kole as Cosel and most of Silesia became Prussian possessions following the First Silesian War. 

However, the Prussian Army had to reconquer the town two years after the Habsburg Pandurs occupied the city during the Second Silesian War; the shelling again caused heavy losses and damages. Although Ernst Gideon von Laudon had to raise his siege in 1760, the rebuilt fortress held against Austrian sieges during the Seven Years’ War. Cosel belonged to the Neustadt (Prudnik) tax inspection district in the 18th century. By the Treaty of Tilsit, the Prussian garrison withstood another besiegement by the allied Napoleonic and Bavarian forces under General Bernhard Erasmus von Deroy in 1807. Cosel became a part of the German Empire in 1871 after being incorporated into the Prussian Province of Silesia in 1815. Construction of the Kodnica Canal between the Oder port and Gliwice from 1806 to 1907 helped promote development in the town.
