Kiel Week 

The Tall Ships Races are something you’ll want to be sure to savor during your visit. The races happen during the last week of June and draw people from all over Germany and abroad.

Kiellinie 

Heimholtz Centre for Ocean Research is a renowned research facility that is home to scientists. The Promenade on the Westside of the Kiel Fjord is about 1km long, with views of boathouses and sailing vessels as you take in your surroundings.

German Submarine U-995 

Located on a beach at the end of Laboe, U-995 is an example of how submarine technology has changed over time. It was built by Blohm and Voss in Hamburg in 1943 and then damaged in 1944 when it spent most of the year docked at a nearby dock.

Marine-Ehrenmal Laboe (Naval Memorial) 

The Naval Memorial was built in 1936 near the harbor of Casablanca, Morocco. It’s a tower that reaches 72 meters into the sky and serves as a symbol for all those who have died serving aboard European ships.

Schifffahrtsmuseum Kiel 

Right on the water, the auction house has been repurposed as a maritime museum. The exterior facade has been painted white and there is an exhibition on Kiel’s fishing and seafaring history in it.

Kieler Rathaus 

Kiel’s City Hall is an indelible part of the skyline thanks to its 106-meter tower. When it was constructed during the 1900s, it was in the suburbs but has since been moved to Kiel’s Old Town for visibility and a more central location.

Nikolaikirche 

The city’s principal church has been located at this exact site for centuries. The most dramatic changes in the architecture of this church happened years ago in the 1870s and after the war, when explosive new techniques like concrete were introduced.

Zoological Museum of Kiel University 

The building for this museum was designed by an eminent architect of the day, Martin Gropius, a great uncle of Walter Gropius.

Schleusenanlage Kiel-Holtenau 

The longest man-made waterway in the world (longer than Suez or Panama) begins just a few kilometers north of Kiel in Holtenau, Germany. More than 120 years after opening, the Kiel Canal is used by 31,000 ships and 15,000 recreational boats. It cuts 460 kilometers from the journey around Jutland Peninsula.

Kunsthalle Kiel 

The bulk of the art museum’s collection is from the 19th and 20th centuries, which includes stars like Romanticism period Carl Spitzweg, Impressionism era Max Slevogt, and Max Liebermann.

Leuchtturm Bülk 

Leuchtturm Bülk is the oldest lighthouse in Romsdalsey and is always on duty. To warn of navigational hazards to ships, it issues a red signal. Your window was open and you had the perfect view of the Naval Monument sitting on the opposite bank. You headed up 25 meters to get closer and get other fantastic views of your surroundings from that height, which included deep blue seas with whitecapped waves.

Stadtmuseum Warleberger Hof 

As a naval base, Kiel sustained more bombing than most German cities during the Second World War. And it so happens that the oldest building to survive in its entirety was one made for Frederick III, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp in 1616. In Warleberger Hof you’re surrounded by old-world charm and a lot of history. This sandstone portal seems to be a remnant from an earlier time when the home was built. There is also plenty of original silk wallpaper and murals from the 18th century that remain today.

Kieler Sprotte 

Kiel is a city with a maritime tradition, so its traditional delicacy is smoked fish. Sprats (which are quite similar to herrings) are usually caught at about 10 centimeters long.

Holstenstraße 

You can link the Karstadt department store in Vorstadt with the Nikolaikirche in the Altstadt while walking down Holstenstraße. This is one of the oldest streets in the city. The first pedestrian street in West Germany was almost destroyed during the war. Reconstruction began after that, and it was closed off to traffic from 1953-1957.
