Kilkenny the anglicized version of the Irish Cill Chainnigh, meaning Cell/Church of Cainneach or Canice. This relates to a church built in honor of St. Canice, a Ulsterman, on the hill now containing St. Canice’s Cathedral and the round tower. In the Spring of 2016, an earth-moving machine was brought to this reservoir in Kilkenny. Administrators on the parish council have pressed for a timber structure to replace the existing earthwork tower from the early 16th century.

Kilkenny is the capital of County Tipperary, home of Ireland’s largest and most internationally famous Guinness brewery. The existence of the Tain Bo Caille, a stone carving on the upper bog body overlooking Carrbridge from Lough Derg in Co. Wicklow, is believed to be older than the written record. Information on the history of Kilkenny can be found in archives, books, and records written by archaeologists. Kilkenny is documented in documents from the 10th century onwards and one of its best-preserved works dates back to the mid-16th century.

But this did not sit well with some Scottish peers whose lands were passed to England. The Scottish Parliament had representative power until 1609. The passing of powers between royal chambers has been called “the origin of Royal Money. As a result, the Irish Catholic Confederation fell victim to English Puritan forces. Some of those involved in its rebellion were tried for treason and executed. “1692 James II went to Kilkenny, and purchased a house at a place called Tinker.…”

In 1967 Patrick McShane was the first author to win a Booker Prize with his novel “The Place on the Beach”. Kilkenny’s cultural scene is flourishing this summer in addition to its annual event.
