Klaipeda Overview

Klaipėda is a port city in Lithuania, where the Baltic Sea meets the Danė River. The old town features German-style, 18th-century wood-framed buildings, and the theater square is home to neoclassical Drama Theater. The square’s Taravos Anikė sculpture pays homage to a Lithuanian poet of the same name. The Lithuanian Sea Museum offers its visitors dolphin shows and maritime exhibits in an old fort.

Names

The Teutonic Knights built a castle in what is now Pilsāts Land and named it “Memelburg”. Later, the name was shortened to “Memel” From 1252 to 1923, and from 1939 to 1945, the town and city were named “Memel”. Since 1945, the Lithuanian name of Klaipėda has been in official use. From 1923-1939 both names were in official use.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms of Klaipėda can also be found on the city’s flag. The modern design was created by Kęstutis Mickevičius, a designer. The modern coat of arms is based on three older seals that were used in Memel over around 400 years, with the first seal being used in 1446. The last one was attributed on July 1, 1992.

History

Archaeological research in the region of the city has revealed evidence of a Baltic tribe occupation that goes back as far as 700AD.

In 1240 the Pope offered Norwegian King Håkon the opportunity to conquer Sambia. Unlike Lithuania which had the acceptance of Christianity from G. Duke Mindaugas, Sambia was taken over by Memel in 1252- where a fort was founded with no resistance from local people. The construction of Memel’s castle was completed in 1253 and it became garrisoned with troops of the Teutonic Order, administered by Eberhard von Seyne. Documents for its foundation had been signed by Eberhard and Bishop Heinrich von Lützelburg, King Ottokar II of Bohemia.

Known as the “Master of Livonia”, Conrad von Thierberg was an important figure in the area of modern-day Latvia and Lithuania. Using Memel as his base, he had attacked Samogitia successfully before attempting to take over it unsuccessfully. This is just one story from our upcoming piece where Memel’s history will be explored in more detail. Memel was colonized by people from Holstein, Lübeck, and Dortmund sometime in the late 13th century. Memel grew to become the main town of the Diocese of Curonia, with a cathedral and at least two parochial churches. Despite this, development around the castle became much more influential. It is said that Memel received Lübeck city rights in 1254 or 1258.

In the spring and summer of 1323, a Lithuanian army led by Gediminas came up the Nemunas River and occupied Memel after conquering it. Later, they devastated the Sambia area forcing the Order to stop fighting in October.” The Teutonic army stationed in Memel during the campaign against Samogitia was replaced with knights from Prussia. The town of Memel was greatly hampered due to threats from Lithuanian tribes that sacked the town in 1379 and again in 1389. Furthermore, in 1389, 800 workers rebuilding Memel were also attacked by Samogitians.

The Treaty of Melno, signed in 1422, was a peace agreement that ended an armed conflict between the Polish Knights of the Teutonic Order and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The treaty stabilized the border between both realms for centuries to come. The last Jagiellonian King, Casimir IV, decided to incorporate the region and make it a part of the Kingdom of Poland at the request of the Prussian Confederation in 1454. After the Thirteen Years War (1454-1466) the town became a Polish fief held by Teutonic Knights and thus found within the Polish-Lithuanian Union. The rebuilt Kulm received city rights in 1475.
