Koblenz Overview

Koblenz is a German city on the Rhine and Moselle rivers. It was established as a Roman military post by Drusus around 8 B.C., and its name originates from the Latin word cōnfluentēs, meaning “flow together” or “mingling”.

Ancient era

Around 1000 BC, early fortifications were built on the Festung Ehrenbreitstein hill on the opposite side of the Moselle River. In 55 BC, Roman troops from Julius Caesar arrived. They bridged over to Koblenz and built a bridge to Andernach. 9 BC is when the “Castellum apud Confluentes” was created by Drusus, one of the military posts he established.

Little remains of an ancient bridge that was built in 49 AD by the Romans. During their time, they had built two castles as protection for the bridge – one in 9 AD and another in the 2nd century. The castle that was destroyed during a Frank attack in 259 is still there. North of Koblenz was a temple of Mercury and Rosmerta, which remained in use up to the 5th century.

Middle Ages

The fall of Rome leads to the occupation of the city by the Franks and a new era in European history. After Charlemagne’s empire split, it became part of Louis the Pious’s kingdom. In 837, it was assigned to Charles the Bald, and a few years later it was here that Carolingian heirs discussed what became the Treaty of Verdun (843), by which the city became part of Normandy under Lothair I. In 860 and 922, Koblenz was taken over by expeditions from the East Franks and Burgundy. In 882, the city of Aachen was sacked and destroyed by Norsemen. But later in 922, Louis the German and his half-brother Charles the Bald reconciled after several misunderstandings. Slavery was condemned by the church in the second century, specifically, it was decreed that any man who led away a Christian man and then sold him should be considered guilty of homicide. The law became part of the eastern German Kingdom called the Roman Empire during their reign in 925.

In 1018, the city was given by the emperor Henry II to the archbishop-elector of Trier after receiving a charter. It remained in the possession of his successors until the end of the 18th century, having been their main residence since the 17th century. In 1198, Philip of Swabia fought to avoid the influence and power of Otto IV in the area. In 1216, part of the lands became Deutsches Eck.

Archbishop Arnold built and strengthened the fortress of Ehrenbreitstein which dominates the city between 1249–1254.

Currently, it’s home to both a brewery and a passenger transport company. It has historically been important for the Rhine lines of communication and transport in the city.

The German Army Forces Command was previously located in Germany’s capital city of Berlin until it was moved to Strausberg in 2012. The military wing of the German Army is now headquartered at the von-Hardenberg-Kaserne, which is near Berlin.
