Paleolithic evidence of human habitation has been found in Konin. Various ancient flint tools and implements have been found near the Warta, including knives, burins, and tanged points. The earliest artifacts were made during the Swiderian culture (Kultura Świderska) of 9000–8000 BC.

From the Roman Empire to the Baltic Sea, the Amber Road crossed the area of present-day Konin, attracting permanent settlements. According to Ptolemy’s map, Setidava (or Getidava) was a probable spot for crossing the Warta and contained an emporium of some significance to merchants traveling along the route. The settlement’s primary burial ground dates back to the Przeworsk culture (Kultura Przeworska) of the 2nd and 3rd centuries A.D. It is located on the dunes west of modern-day Konin.

Gród Kaszuba was the most important of the fortified settlements near present-day Konin toward the end of the early Middle Ages. Located on the meadows near the Warta, Gród Kaszuba was inhabited from the 10th to the 12th centuries. Fortifications were likely damaged by floods, which led to their abandonment. On the river’s south bank, you can see the remains of Gród Kaszuba.

In the high to late Middle Ages, there was a complex of settlements in Stare Miasto during the 12th and 13th centuries, where there was a large settlement named Konin, a marketplace, and a sandstone church. After Konin had been reestablished elsewhere, the name Stare Miasto first appeared. There is still a magnificent carved portal in SS Peter and Paul’s Parish Church and a solar clock on the south wall, perhaps Greater Poland’s oldest clock.) The settlement was plundered and burned during the Teutonic Knights’ invasion in 1331. In the less defensible spot, where the Old Town of Konin is located today, the town of Konin was reestablished six kilometers (3.7 miles) to the northeast.
