Located at the western end of Lake Constance in the south of Germany, Konstanz (also called Constance in English) is a university city with approximately 83,000 residents. Over 1,200 years ago, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Konstanz resided in Konstanz, home to the University of Konstanz.
On the banks of Lake Constance (Bodensee in German), the city is located in Baden-Württemberg. By flowing under a bridge that connects the two parts of the town, the Rhine, which originates in the Swiss Alps, flows through Lake Constance and leaves it considerably more extensive. In the north residential areas, industrial estates, and the Konstanz University. On the south side of the river, you will find the old town, which is home to the administrative center, shopping facilities, and the Hochschule. Pedestrians can access Friedrichshafen via the Katamaran, which provides a car ferry service across Lake Constance. Along its southwestern and southern edges, the German-Swiss border separates the city from Kreuzlingen, a Swiss town.
There are 15 districts or wards in Konstanz (Stadtteile). Before its incorporation into Konstanz on 1 December 1971, Mainau was part of Litzelstetten ward, a separate municipality.
Ancient traces of civilization can be found in Konstanz, dating back to the late Stone Age. The Romans conquered the Celts south of the Danube during the reign of Augustus. Approximately 40 A.D. was the year when the first Romans settled there. Drusomagus, a small town on the left bank of the Rhine, probably belonged to the Roman province of Raetia. A strong fortress was built around 300 AD by the Roman emperor Constantius Chlorus, who fought the Alemanni in the region and named it Constantia, or by his grandson Constantius II, who visited the area in 354. In 2003, the remains of the late Roman fortress Constantia were discovered.
A bishop took up residence in Konstanz around 585, establishing the city’s importance as a spiritual center—clerical rights exempted about a quarter of Konstanz’s 6,000 inhabitants from taxation by the late Middle Ages.
The Middle Ages was a time of flourishing trade. Konstanz was strategically located in the Duchy of Swabia because it owned the only bridge that crossed the Rhine. Linen production had earned the city an international reputation and made it prosperous. Since Konstanz gained the status of Imperial City in 1192, it has been subject only to the Holy Roman Emperor.
During the Council of Constance in 1414-1418, Jan Hus (Czech religious thinker, philosopher, and reformer), seen by the Roman Catholic Church as a threat to Christianity, was burned at the stake on 6 July 1415. Pope Martin V was elected during the only conclave ever held north of the Alps here, ending the Papal Schism. It shows the everyday life of medieval Konstanz and all the significant events during the Council of Constance as chronicled by Ulrich von Richental. By the harbor, you can still see the Konzil building where the conclave was held. This statue was erected in 1993 as a satirical tribute to the Council.
As a result of its location in southwest Germany, Konstanz has a degraded oceanic climate with mild summers and cold winters (moderated by the lake).
A High Rhine Railway line runs west from Konstanz to Singen, connecting all parts of Germany, and the Etzwilen-Konstanz line runs south into Switzerland, connecting to major routes at Weinfelden. As well as Deutsche Bahn AG, the Swiss Thurbo company, and its German subsidiary provide services. A fast ferry service on the lake connects Konstanz to other lakeside towns, including Friedrichshafen, the nearest airport. There are flights to Austria and Turkey from the airport, but the airport mainly serves domestic flights. There are three international airports near Konstanz: Stuttgart, Basel, and Zurich, with a direct train connection. Stadtwerke Konstanz GmbH is responsible for providing bus services within the city.
Since 2005, Konstanz and Friedrichshafen have also been connected by the Constance and Fridolin catamarans (since 2008, three).
Every time you visit Konstanz, you will be swept away by its beauty, charm, and history. The city’s remarkable history dates back to the stone age and has remained virtually unchanged for centuries. This energetic university town is home to more than 85,000 people.
As the home of Ferdinand von Zeppelin, the airship inventor, Konstanz is famous in Germany. Lake Constance still offers plenty of opportunities for zeppelin rides, which were popular during his time.
