Kortrijk Overview

Kortrijk, also known as Courtrai or Courtray in English, is a Belgian city and municipality in the Flemish province of West Flanders. The city’s most significant capital is located in the Kortrijk judicial and administrative arrondissement.

Name

Cortoriacum is the Latin name for a settlement near the curb of a river. In some literature, ‘Cortoracum’ is also mentioned, and it later became known as ‘Cortrycke,’ ‘Cortryck,’ and ‘Kortrijk’ (19th century). Courtrai is the name of the city in both French and English.

History

Three Roman funeral pyres were found during an archeological dig in 1950, suggesting that the vicus was used as an encampment by the Romans during their invasion of Britain in A.D. 43.

At the crossroads of the Roman roads linking Tongeren with Cassel and Tournai with Oudenburg, Cortoriacum was a larger Gallo-Roman vicus of Civitas Menapiorum. In a document from the 4th or 5th century called Notitia Dignitatum, the cortoriacenses (cavalry) troops were mentioned. Flanders was fortified against the Vikings during the 9th century by Baldwin II, Count of Flanders. Philip, Count of Flanders, granted a city charter to the town in 1190. There are still parts of the Broeltorens, Armory, and Kortrijk’s defensive walls visible today due to the population growth. Several local places still refer to physical features of the defensive structures around Kortrijk (Walle, Waterpoort, Menenpoort, Gentsepoort, Brugsepoort, Kasteelkaai); most of the physical parts are overbuilt or destroyed.

Battles between Fernando of Portugal, Count of Flanders, and Louis VIII of France, his first cousin, led to the city’s destruction in the 13th century. In the following years, it was rebuilt by the Counts of Flanders. Joan, Countess of Flanders, granted a property tax exemption to settlers in Courtrai to promote industry and weaving. During this time, Kortrijk became an essential center for linen production.

Best Things to Do in Kortrijk (Belgium)

Begijnhof Kortrijk

This UNESCO-listed beguinage is an enchanting little village on a knot of alleys within the old city. It was built in the 13th century by Joan, Countess of Flanders (1199-1244). The complex for lay religious women, located between the city’s two main churches, was ransacked several times, including during the Battle of the Golden Spurs in 1302.

Broeltorens

In the center of Kortrijk, the Counts of Flanders constructed a castle and defensive compound in the 9th century. A pair of circular sandstone and limestone towers stand on either bank of the Oude Leie river as all that remains of the Medieval walls.

Kortrijk 1302

The Begijnhofpark has a multimedia history museum housed in a building that once belonged to the Cistercian Groeninge Abbey. Initially built in the 13th century, the monastery was rebuilt within the walls in the 1580s after the Spanish destroyed the abbey outside.

Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk

The victors of the Battle of the Golden Spurs hung the golden spurs of 500 dead French knights from the ceiling of this former collegiate church. Replicas of the originals were erected later in the same century, replacing the looted ones.

Grote Markt

A map of Grote Markt shows the eastern side has a curve, tracing the lost walls of Baldwin II’s castle, founded in the 9th century.

Historisch Stadhuis

On the north side of Grote Markt is the magnificent historic town hall, with a core from 1418 and a facade from 1520.

Texture Museum

This museum tells the story of flax growing in the Leie Valley and how it was turned into linen, which was Kortrijk’s lifeblood for centuries and remains so today.

Belfry

Adding to the square in the 14th century, when Kortrijk was becoming a hub for Flemish cloth manufacturing, the belfry became an enduring symbol of the city.

Sint-Maartenskerk

Saint Eligius, the Merovingian saint who lived between 588 and 660, founded a church on this site in 650. By the 14th and 15th centuries, the Romanesque building had been replaced by the current Gothic structure.

Baggaertshof

Named for its founder Josijne Baggaert, the Baggaertshof has 13 little houses facing inwards on a rectangular courtyard. A polychrome carving of Madonna with Child is found at the chapel’s altar, produced in 1626 by Kortrijk master-sculptor Jan Bolle Veys and painted by Joes van Moerkercke.
