Kosice Overview

Košice lies near the Hungarian border in eastern Slovakia. The Lower Gate archaeological complex preserves 13th-century fortifications from the city’s medieval origins. Hlavné námestie, the main square, is dominated by two Gothic churches: St. Elisabeth Cathedral and St. Michael Chapel. The wax figurine museum at St. Urban’s Tower is nearby.

Etymology

The city was first written about in 1230 under the name “Villa Cassa.” The name probably comes from the Slavic personal name Koš, Koša → Košici (Koš’people) → Košice (1382–1383) with the patronymic Slavic suffix “-ice” through a natural development in Slovak (similar place names are also known from other Slavic countries). In Hungarian Koša → Kasa, Kassa with a vowel mutation typical for the borrowing of old Slavic names in the region (Vojkovce → Vajkócz, Sokoľ → Szakalya, Szakál, Hodkovce → Hatkóc, etc.). During the 15th century, it became common to use the Latinized form Cassovia.

History

Settlement dates back to the end of the Paleolithic era. In 1230, Choice (as Villa Cassa – the royal village) was first mentioned in writing. King Béla IV of Hungary invited German colonists to fill the void left by the Mongol invasion in 1241. In the Kingdom of Hungary, the city was located in the historic Abauj County.

Lower Kassa and Upper Kassa were independent settlements that merged in the 13th century around the long lens-shaped ring that is today’s Main Street. In 1290, the first town privileges were recorded. Located on an international trading route connecting agriculturally rich central Hungary to central Poland along a more significant way connecting the Balkans to the Adriatic and Aegean seas, the city increased. In addition to developing crafts and business, increasing importance (seat of the royal chamber for Upper Hungary), and building solid fortifications, the king’s privileges were beneficial. Hungarian guild regulations were registered here for the first time in 1307.

As a Hungarian free royal town, Košice reinforced the king’s troops during the bloody Battle of Rozgony in 1312 against the powerful Amadé Aba (family). Hungarian-accessible royal towns ranked second in 1347, with the same rights as Buda, the capital. Louis I of Hungary granted it its coat of arms in 1369. During Louis I’s Diet in Kosice, women were allowed to inherit the Hungarian throne.

Dynastic conflicts over the Hungarian throne influenced the history of Choice heavily. The decline of continental trade also brought about stagnation. Vladislaus III of Varna 1441 did not capture the city. Tamás Székely’s Hungarian army was defeated in 1449 by John Jiskra’s Bohemian mercenaries. A six-month siege in 1491 by John I Albert, Prince of Poland, failed to capture the city. Ferdinand I, Holy Roman Emperor, was honored in 1526 by the town. Ferdinand, I reconquered the city in 1551 after John Zápolya captured it in 1536. The settlement became the seat of the Upper Hungary Captaincy in 1554.

At the time, the unemployment rate in November 2015 was 8.32%, lower than the country’s average of 10.77%.

15 Best Things to Do in Košice (Slovakia)

  1. Hlavná Ulica (Main Street)

    – Located along Hlavná Ulica, Koice’s historical monuments can be found all in one location. A line of squares, fountains, and little parks intersperses the city’s main sights on the inside. You can jump from one incredible monument to another here, including the cathedral, Urban Tower, State Theatre, and St Michael Chapel.
  2. St Elisabeth Cathedral

    – Built-in 1378, St Elisabeth Cathedral is the westernmost Gothic cathedral in Europe and Slovakia’s most prominent place of worship. This cathedral’s north portal is the most ornamented, rather than the west or south.
  3. Urban’s Tower

    – Inside, there is a waxwork exhibition featuring famous historical figures from the city. As with Urban’s Tower, the tower is Gothic, with little additions like the portal, carved in the 17th century, and the arcades on the corners.
  4. St Michael Chapel

    – Built in the 1300s, this beautiful chapel is the last of the Gothic monuments surrounding the cathedral. Initially, an ossuary dedicated to St Michael, the patron saint of the dead, has ledger stones in its outer walls dating back to the 1370s, like Urban’s Tower.
  5. Immaculata (Plague Pillar)

    – This Baroque Marian column was erected in the 1720s to thank the Virgin for ending the plague epidemic in Košice in 1709-10. The pedestal is surrounded by Saint Sebastian, Saint Ladislaus, and Saint Joseph statues.
  6. State Theatre

    – Košice’s striking Neo-Baroque opera house is located on Hlavná Ulica and replaced its first theater in 1756. Adolf Lang, a German-Hungarian who specialized in the bold Historicist style, designed many buildings in Hungary in that style.
  7. Mikluš Prison

    – Located off Hlavná Ulica, this compound consists of two medieval houses that were converted into Koice’s city prison in the early 1600s. It’s surreal that these houses were everyday residences 350 years ago.
  8. Levočský Dom

    – Slovaks’ oldest inn, established in the 15th century, is located near the State Theater on Hlavná Ulica. Many of the city’s most influential figures have owned it for almost all that time.
  9. Beggar’s House

    – This stunning Art Nouveau house dating from 1898 overlooks the Immaculata and is one of the prettiest in Košice. Above the beggar’s statue is a mural of Elizabeth of Hungary, doffing his cap to passersby below.
  10. Old Town Hall

    – Ko’ice’s visitor center and tourist office are located in the Old Town Hall, a great place to start your visit. After losing the Battle of Austerlitz to Napoleon’s army, Russian field marshal Mikhail Kutuzov stayed here on his way home.
  11. Košice Gold Treasure

    – One of the first things that come to mind when you think of Košice is its gold treasure. Slovakia has the largest gold hoard in the world and the largest gold hoard in the world as a whole. Coins from 16 different regions of Europe were found in this stash while excavating the foundations of the Finance Directorate in 1935.
  12. New Orthodox Synagogue

    – It’s located on Pukinova Street, just a few blocks east of the cathedral. A cornice reminiscent of Renaissance structures in Eastern Slovakia can be seen on the Neoclassical facade.
  13. Church of the Holy Trinity

    – Choice was a protestant city in the 16th and 17th centuries. As a result of the Thirty Years’ War, it fell into the hands of the Catholic Habsburgs in the mid-1600s. In an apology for a massacre of Jesuit priests during the war, this Baroque church was built for the Jesuits by the city in the spirit of Counter-Reformation.
  14. Singing Fountain and Chimes

A small park surrounded by tall fir trees cover the main square (Hlavné Námestie). The fountain is surrounded by speakers playing classical and pop music and dozens of jets.
  15. Tabačka Kulturfabrik

    – Heading out of the medieval core and into the grittier part of Choice is a worthwhile experience. The Taba+ka Kulturfabrik showcases this beautiful cultural center in a disused tobacco factory.
