Burg Linn 

In the area of Linn in North Rhine-Westphalia, known as “The Heart of Westphalia”, is the oldest castle on the Lower Rhine. It is part of Burg Linn, a castle that was raised by Otto von Linn in the 1100s and by the 1400s it was one of the largest moated castles in the region.

Museum Burg Linn 

There’s a museum of local archaeology in the 18th-century hunting lodge neighboring the castle that’s filled with treasures from the Lower Rhine region. The 18th and 19th-century interiors and furniture have been preserved so that visitors can experience what it might have looked like back in those days. There’s also a cache of historical mechanical musical instruments that rotate every Sunday morning so you can appreciate them in action!

Kaiser Wilhelm Museum 

The main building of the Kunstmuseen Krefeld is an eclectic-style palace inaugurated in 1899. It boasts a large collection that includes 14,000 works from all fields of painting, sculpting, and graphical art. When talking about 20th-century art, you have to mention Rodin, who is considered to be one of the best sculptors ever. There are a lot of Monet’s studies and paintings by the Expressionists Emil Nolde, Heinrich Campendonk, Kandinsky, and Kirchner.

Haus Lange and Haus Esters 

This pair of villas was designed by Mies van der Rohe for two Krefeld textile industrialists. They come under the “Kunstmuseen Krefeld” umbrella and are both museum pieces in their own right.

Deutsches Textilmuseum 

“The German Textile Museum has an internationally recognized fund of textiles, clothing, and woven fabrics from all periods and parts of the world,” says the German Textile Museum. There are around 30,000 pieces, with none able to be kept on the show for extended periods.

Stadtpark Uerdingen 

Before the 1900s, the park was originally marshy ground that would flood in rainy seasons. That changed because it was drained into a pond. The south side of the reservoir is a romantic place to unwind and opt for food, with a restaurant included.

Botanischer Garten Krefeld 

In this botanical garden, you can find many varieties of common and rare plants. They were first planted in 1928 and now 5,000 types are living on a 15-hectare plot!

Haus der Seidenkultur

Zoo Krefeld 

Krefeld’s most-visited attraction is its zoo, which has been celebrated for a long time. The zoo provides an opportunity to explore living spaces that are designed to simulate the animals’ natural environments more closely than ever before.

Stadtwald 

Krefeld’s city forest was officially founded in 1876 and has been a popular spot for recreation for a century now. The land that it is located on was donated by Wilhelm Deuß, an entrepreneur who founded the factory in Krefeld, so it has always been a valuable piece of the landscape.

Kulturfabrik Krefeld (Kufa) 

Modern clubs, theatre groups, comedians, and cabaret artists will be on the program of Kulturfabrik’s two halls, which can each hold up to 750 people in total. The club nights are a great chance for anyone looking for a night out to dig into their favorite genres.

Hülser Berg 

In the northwest of Krefeld, the landscape becomes very sparsely populated, and after WWII this spot was chosen to dump rubble from Krefeld’s bombed-out buildings. Hülser Berg is also here, the tallest natural hill with a 30-meter lookout.

Weinbrennerei Dujardin 

In the town of Uerdingen, there’s a distillery that found success through Napoleon’s dictatorship over the Rhine. Production has now moved away from the distillery, but they have kept some copper stills, barrels that can hold 9,000 liters, and a collection of 100-year-old bottles.

Villa Merländer 

In Krefeld on the Rhine, Richard Merländer lived in Villa Merländer on Friedrich-Ebert-Strasse. The silk merchant was born in 1874 in Mülheim across the river where his father owned a patisserie. He was Jewish, meaning he was persecuted by the Nazis during World War II. He was forced to sell his business and property and received less than they were worth in the 1930s, but he went on to live a very successful life.
