In the province of Hainaut, Belgium, La Louvière is a city and municipality of Wallonia. The municipality is divided into the following districts: Boussoit, Haine-Saint-Paul, Haine-Saint-Pierre, Houdeng-Aimeries, Houdeng-Gœgnies, La Louvière, Maurage, Saint-Vaast, Strépy-Bracquegnies, and Trivières.
History
The mythical birth of Rome is reminiscent of the legend of a mother wolf nursing a child at La Louvière. Nevertheless, the city’s true origin dates back to the 12th century. Renault, from the Old French meaning “wolf’s lair,” was the name given to the forested territory of today’s La Louvière at that time. Initially, this land was part of the Saint-Vaast community, which belonged to the Abbey of Aulne.
In 1284, the territory’s name was translated into Latin and then French as La Louvière. Saint-Vaast’s lords encouraged prospecting on their land, resulting in the first coal extraction in 1390. Despite this, large-scale development was impossible until the 18th century because the abbey refused to provide the necessary infrastructure.
After constructing roads, canals, and railways in the 19th century, local coal production could finally be exported. Due to the abundant energy source, investments also poured into the local industry. The population of La Louvière quickly surpassed that of Saint-Vaast, as well as its economic wealth. In fifty years, the Wallonian city that was nothing more than a place name had become one of the most important cities in the country. In 1869, La Louvière was recognized as an independent city. Charleroi, Liège, Namur, and Mons are the four largest cities in Wallonia, followed by La Louvière.

Summers in La Louvière is short, comfortable, and partly cloudy, while winters are long, cold, windy, and mostly cloudy. The temperature ranges between 34°F and 74°F throughout the year, rarely falling below 21°F or rising above 85°F. Folklore
La Louvière Carnival is called Laetare, which means “to enjoy” (the introduction at mass on the fourth Sunday of Lent begins Laetare Jerusalem, Rejoice Jerusalem). It takes place between Sunday and Tuesday during Lent, lasting three days. On all three days, the Gilles stomp to the rhythm of their music and distribute oranges to passersby. As part of the parades and festivities, giant puppets and other groups also participate. One of La Louvière’s most famous celebrations is the Brûlage des Bosses (“burning of the humps”), where a puppet dressed as a Gilles is burned to mark the end of carnival and the beginning of a new era.
Sports
RAA Louviéroise was a top-level football club in La Louvière, and this club won the Belgian Cup in 2003. Still, it no longer exists as it merged into another team and its La Louvière playground now belongs to U.R. La Louvière Centre, a third-division semi-amateur club.
