The port city of La Spezia is located in Liguria, Italy. Seafaring heritage can be seen in the city’s 1800s maritime arsenal and Technical Naval Museum, which displays ship models and navigational instruments. An archaeological museum houses artifacts from prehistory to the Middle Ages at St. George’s Castle on a hilltop. The nearby Amedeo Lia Museum exhibits paintings, bronze sculptures, and illuminated miniatures in a former convent.
History
The province of La Spezia has been settled since prehistoric times. Luni, not far from Sarzana, was the most important Roman center. La Spezia was inevitably at the mercy of Genoese events as the capital of the short-lived Niccolò Fieschi Signoria between 1256 and 1273. As Liguria’s capital Genoa grew, developed, and changed after the fall of the Republic of Genoa, an independent state until 1797, La Spezia also changed and evolved. The urban layout, as well as the types of buildings and decorations, still exhibit this Ligurian influence. Old Town’s carrugio, a narrow street that divides it in two, is an excellent example. A large stone, called a pier one or prione in the local dialect, once held public announcements and was named Via del Prione.
From the sea, it is possible to see traces of history, partly hidden but still evident: engraved stones, capitals, and portals of the fourteenth-century sandstone, double lancet windows that were vaguely reminiscent of the future Renaissance style of mannerism, baroque pediments, and decorations similar to those found in the portals of the palaces once owned by the Doria family and the Princes of Massa.
After 1861, when the Royal government commissioned a tremendous naval arsenal in La Spezia, the city developed substantially. The Italian Navy was ordered to steam into British hands at Malta in September 1943 after the Italians capitulated to the Allies. It was too late for the Germans to prevent the fleet from departing. The Kaiser Franz Josef, a trans-Atlantic liner built in Trieste in 1911 for the Austrian Lloyd company, was also launched from La Spezia during the war. The ship sank in 1944 in the harbor of La Spezia.

La Spezia is characterized by a humid subtropical climate (Cfa) and a Mediterranean climate (Csa). A hot summer, a chilly winter, and a very changeable, rainy autumn and spring are the hallmarks of the city’s climate. It is predicted that the coldest month (January) will have a minimum temperature of 4°C (39°F) and a maximum temperature of 11°C (52°F).

La Spezia is home to the chief Italian naval base and arsenal and a naval navigation school. Besides being a commercial port, it has shipyards and industries producing machinery, metal products, and refined petroleum.
