Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Overview

Located in the Atlantic Ocean, Las Palmas is the capital and largest city of Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands.

Together with Santa Cruz de Tenerife, it is the capital city of the Canary Islands and the most populous city in the autonomous community of the Canary Islands. With a population of 381,223, it is the ninth-largest city in Spain. Aside from that, it is Spain’s fifth-most populated urban area and (depending on the source) its ninth or tenth-most populous metropolitan area.

In the Atlantic Ocean, Las Palmas lies in the northeastern part of the island of Gran Canaria, about 150 km (93 mi) west of the Moroccan coast. With warm temperatures throughout the year, Las Palmas has a hot desert climate offset by the cool Canary Current. Average annual temperatures are 21.2 degrees Celsius (70.2 degrees Fahrenheit).

Founded in 1478, the town was considered the de facto capital of the Canary Islands (without legal recognition). A four-year term of the Canarian Ministry of Presidency is shared with Santa Cruz de Tenerife, half of the government’s ministries and boards, and the High Court of Justice.

History

As a result of Juan Rejón’s founding of the city on June 24, 1478, it is known as ‘Real de Las Palmas.’ It was Rejón who was in charge of the invading Castilian army, which engaged the locals in war.

The war began at the mouth of the Guiniguada ravine, where he settled with his 30 soldiers, El Real de Las Palmas, today’s Vegueta district.

Over the course of five years, the Aboriginal side suffered many losses, especially since they lacked the means to defend themselves from the armies sent by the Catholic monarchs. It was still a fierce battle despite the resistance. Conquest ended in 1483 when Pedro de Vera, the conqueror who had subjugated the natives of Gáldar on the northwest of the island, incorporated the island into the Crown of Castile.

Real de Las Palmas became the diocese of El Rubicón (Lanzarote) on November 20, 1485. With the establishment of the Bishopric of the Canary Islands, the first Court of the Holy Inquisition, the Royal Court of the Canary Islands, and the residence of the Captains General of the Canary Islands, the city gradually grew in importance. Although the capital, as understood from the 19th century onwards, did not exist in the archipelago, given that the Captain General’s Residence was in Las Palmas, we can consider this to have been the capital of the Canary Islands during part of the 16th and 17th centuries. It remained the honorary capital of the Canary Archipelago even though it had no legal or real significance after that.

On his first trip to the Americas, Christopher Columbus (Spanish: Cristóbal Colón) anchored in Las Palmas to repair the rudder of his ship Pinta and spent some time on the neighboring island. In addition, he stopped there on the way back to Spain. Named after him is the Colón House, a museum in the Vegueta district.

The Battle of Las Palmas was fought in 1595 when Francis Drake tried to plunder the town. The Dutch raid under Vice-admiral Pieter van der Does in 1599 was slightly more successful; some towns were destroyed, but the raiders were beaten back.

The closure of the Suez Canal during the Suez Crisis greatly benefited Las Palmas’ seaport, Puerto de la Luz (internationally known as La Luz port). During this time, many foreign workers moved to the city.

In 1718, about 25 Canary Islanders founded Las Palmas, a sister city of San Antonio, Texas, in the United States.

Climate

The climate of Las Palmas can be classified as a hot desert climate (BWh) with warm, dry summers and warm enough winters to classify it as tropical. The average annual temperature is 21.2 °C (70.2 °F)–28 °C (82 °F) during the day and 18 °C (64 °F) at night. A typical January temperature ranges from 19 to 23 °C (66 to 73 °F) during the day and 15 to 16 °C (59 to 61 °F) at night, with an average sea temperature of 20 °C (68 °F). Temperatures typically range from 27 to 30 °C (81 to 86 °F) during the day and above 21 °C (70 °F) at night in August and September, with an average sea temperature of 23 °C (73 °F). Temperature fluctuations are rarely prominent.

Demographics

As of 2008, nearly half (45.9%) of Gran Canaria’s inhabitants live in Las Palmas, and 18.35% of the Canary Islands’ population also lives there. The National Statistics Institute of Spain found that Las Palmas de Gran Canaria residents have an average life expectancy of 80.9 years.

Education

The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was founded in 1989 in Las Palmas.

Various state and public primary and secondary schools are also available in the city.

Culture

There is a wide variety of theater, cinema, opera, concerts, visual arts, and dance performances in Las Palmas. Festivals such as the Canary Islands Music Festival, the Theatre and Dance Festival, and the International Film Festival are held in the city. San Juan’s City Fiestas are celebrated in June each year, with the main festival commemorating the festival’s founding. It is one of the main attractions for Las Palmas de Gran Canaria tourists to attend the Carnival. A tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites includes the city center of Las Palmas, particularly the Vegueta and Triana neighborhoods.

Transportation

  • Roads and highways – In some areas and on certain days, urban roads are overcrowded; a city street plan must be rectilinear, confusing even for experienced drivers.
  • Airport – Gran Canaria Airport, also known as Las Palmas Airport (IATA: LPA, ICAO: GCLP).
  • Seaport – The Port of Las Palmas (Las Palmas Port) is the main port for fishing, commercial, passenger, and tourism activities in northwest Las Palmas.
  • The company Guaguas Municipales operates a bus system in Las Palmas. Municipal Bus Lines offer 40 routes for urban transportation.
  • Rail – Gran Canaria does not currently have a rail transport system. Las Palmas and Puerto Luz were connected by steam trams between 1893 and 1944.

Sport

There are three major professional sports teams based in Las Palmas. The following are listed:

  • U.D. Las Palmas – a Spanish football club playing in the Segunda División. With a capacity of 32,665, the team’s home stadium is Estadio de Gran Canaria. Until recently, the team played at Estadio Insular, a stadium with 22,000 (now closed). Runner-up in the Spanish SuperLeague 1968-1969, Runner-up in the Spanish Cup 1977-1978, Semifinalist in the Spanish Cup 1974, 1984, 1997.
  • CB Gran Canaria – a basketball club competing in Liga ACB at the Palacio de Deportes de Las Palmas, with a seating capacity of 9,870. His honors include winning the Spanish Supercup in 2016.
  • La Caja de Canarias (Club Voleibol J.A.V. Olímpico) – A women’s volleyball club in the Superliga Femenina de Voleibol.

Group D of the 2014 FIBA World Championship consisted of Lithuania, Angola, Korea, Slovenia, Mexico, and Australia at Las Palmas. Approximately 10,000 people could watch the matches at Gran Canaria Arena, the new arena.

There are many (mainly) outdoor sports practiced in the city and neighborhood, such as surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, swimming, diving, skydiving, paragliding, running, cycling, rowing, tennis, and golf (primarily at Las Palmeras Golf, Real Club De Golf De Las Palmas, El Cortijo Club de Campo, and Oasis Golf). As the oldest golf club in Spain, the Real Club De Golf De Las Palmas was inaugurated on December 17, 1891.

Health system

Las Palmas is home to both of Gran Canaria’s general hospitals. While Hospital Universitario de Gran Canaria Doctor Negrín (Doctor Negrín University Hospital of Gran Canaria) is geared to health care in the north and west of the island, Hospital Universitario Insular de Gran Canaria (Insular University Hospital of Gran Canaria) is geared to health care in the south and east of the island. There are also smaller private hospitals and clinics.

What is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria known for?

Its most notable features are the area’s dunes and the old lighthouse, which first burned in 1890. Many find the site an excellent place to base a vacation on the Canary Islands because of the abundance of hotels and restaurants surrounding the beach.
