Las Rozas de Madrid Overview
In Madrid, Spain, Las Rozas de Madrid is one of the largest townships and municipalities, with an area of 59 km2. It is located 20 km (12 miles) northwest of Madrid, on the A-6 freeway leading to A Coruña. It lies near the fork in the road M-505 to El Escorial, which marks the southern border of this ‘comarca’ or rural district (although it is no longer rural).
History
According to the Spanish language, Rozas means clearings. Various theories abound, including clearing by Romans for military exercises, collecting firewood, or creating farmland. In the third century, Miacum was associated with the city of Madrid. Some historians believe that Las Rozas could be the old Miacum.
In Las Rozas, you can find the river Guadarrama (which flows all year long) and the ancient road between Segovia and Titulcia (two of the oldest settlements in the region). Near Las Rozas, this ancient road is now approximately the route of the A6 and M505.
It was the scene of significant battles during the Spanish civil war, and concrete bunkers remain in the Dehesa of Navalcarbón and the valley of the river Guadarrama.
From their bases at Brunete, Villaviciosa de Odón, and Campamento, the pro-Franco troops advanced toward Madrid’s west in 1936. One of the bloodiest battles of the civil war occurred in a dense fog with freezing temperatures when Franco’s rebels, supported by the air force, engaged the Republican forces. Caves in Hoyo de Manzanares provided refuge to the inhabitants of Las Rozas and other places of the nearby Sierra (mountains). Cucos (the sly ones) were nicknamed by these roce’os (Las Rozas residents).
There were 270 houses in the pre-war settlement, but only 13 remained intact after the war. The Church of San Miguel was severely damaged, and 92 homes were severely damaged. Las Rozas was included in the General Directorate of Devastated Regions created by the Ministry of the Interior to reconstruct devastated regions.
Transportation
Las Rozas is accessible by the Autopista del Noroeste (Northwest Freeway) (freeway that goes from Las Rozas to Adanero(Vila)), the M-50 (third ring road around Madrid), and the M-505 (County Road to El Escorial). Having been put into service in 1967, this is one of the earliest freeways in Spain. This freeway becomes a tollway in Collado Villalba, 22 km (14 miles) northwest of Las Rozas.
Moncloa (Madrid) is connected by seven bus lines: 621, 624 (Burgo of Las Rozas), 622 (Las Matas), 623 (Villafranca del Castillo), 626, 628, 629 (new zones like the Business Park La Dehesa, and El Cantil). Additionally, Las Rozas is connected to Aluche (Madrid) by a bus line (561), passing through Majadahonda and Pozuelo.
Located near the Old Town in south Las Rozas, Las Rozas, Las Matas, and El Pinar are the three main train stations. (Dark green) Lines 8 and 9 connect Atocha in the south of Madrid and Chamartin in the north of Madrid via El Tejar, El Pinar, and Las Matas, with end stations El Escorial, Cercedilla, and Cotos Ski. Atocha is also served by line 10. However, the line runs along a long circular route via Las Rozas, Pinar, and Las Matas to Principe Pio in the west of Madrid. Las Rozas is served by a circular line that runs around Madrid. A brief interchange stop between lines 8, 9, and 10 occurs at El Tejar (no facilities or habitations exist in the area). A fifth halt at Los Peascales (near Las Matas) was completely suppressed.
A project proposal, Las Rozas: the Green Capital of the Northwest of Madrid, seeks to encourage ecologically sustainable transport, particularly electric scooters. Park and Ride facilities should be built in El Pinar or Las Matas to access significant retailers in the municipality and commuter routes to Madrid. Approximately 5 kilometers (3 miles) south of Las Rozas (which is at “Km 22” from Madrid), the nearby auto A-6 is regularly congested at an accident blackspot on “Km 16” (near Majadahonda).
Culture
The Joaquin Rodrigo Auditorium is the center of many cultural activities, including a school of music and dance, four cultural centers, three libraries, and five exhibition facilities.
The official website of the municipality lists: an annual Carnival, Concerts of Sacred Music, Choral Music and Folk Winter Festival, and The Composers of Spain International Piano Competition.
Additionally, there are themed street markets, horsemanship fairs in April, seafood and tapas exhibitions in the summer, and Festibike international cycling events.
Sports
Las Rozas has always been a significant place for sporting events, and it is the only municipality to have won two national sports awards thanks to its exceptional training facilities.
A football team (Las Rozas CF) represents Las Rozas in the Spanish Tercera División (level four of the Spanish football league system). Additionally, a futsal team in the town was recently relegated to the silver division.
Also, Las Rozas has a basketball team competing at the third level of Spanish basketball, Liga Leb Plata. The number of groups in C.B. Las Rozas is growing yearly, and currently there are more than 31. They also performed well during the 1990s, narrowly missing out on promotion to the Premier division, today’s Liga ACB.
A.D. Ingenieros Industriales has played in the National First Division (the third level in Spanish Rugby) for the last 15 years. The club uses a synthetic pitch in the Cantizal area. El Cantizal field is also home to the Las Rozas Black Demons, an American Football team that competes in the LNFA.
The municipality also has the Ciudad del Football de la Real Federación Espanola de Ftbol (the Football City of the Royal Spanish Football Federation), built on land donated by the town council. There have been two occasions when the TSJM has failed to return these municipal plots.
Toad in the hole, Hammer throw, Calva, a sort of Horseshoes, and Chito, an activity in which a diskus is aimed at a target upon which a coin is balanced, are also popular sports.

In Las Rozas de Madrid, the summers are short, hot, dry, and mostly clear, while the winters are long, freezing, and partly cloudy.
