Leganes Overview
Spain’s Leganes is a city in the Community of Madrid. Located about 11 km southwest of Madrid’s center, it is considered part of the Madrid metropolitan area. In 2018, it had a population of 188,425, making it the fifth most populous municipality in the region. A 43.09-square-kilometer area with a height of 667 meters covers this area.
There is a branch of Carlos III University in Leganés. From Madrid, it is reached by the Cercanas (train line C5) or by Metrosur, a line of the Metro. Six Metrosur stations are located in Leganés.
The five suspects in the 11 March 2004 Madrid attacks blew themselves up in an apartment building as police moved in to arrest them on 3 April 2004. In addition to the five victims, one GEO police officer was also killed.
Etymology
Leganés was described in 16th-century annals as a corruption of Leganar. There was allegedly an abundance of slime (slime) in the area in ancient times, as reported in the latter.
Geography
The city is located approximately 667 meters above sea level in the central part of the Iberian Peninsula. Around the urban core are motorways, including the M-40, the A-42, the R-5, the M-45, and the M-50.
History
It is tentatively believed that the settlement was founded around 1280. The hamlet remained a small settlement throughout the Middle Ages, for which little information is known. By the 16th century, it belonged to the Land of Madrid, and the Crown sold it in 1626, and it became an eldership.
Sports and leisure
The city has many shops and family centers, especially around Parquesur. In every neighborhood, there are at least two large parks for recreation. The city’s restaurants are well known for their quality in the downtown area or near parks like La Chopera.
This “Pista de Hielo” ice skating rink trains people from all over Madrid in figure skating and ice hockey, and the Leganés ice hockey team also plays there. In addition to the “Ice Rink,” the city has ten sports centers (Polideportivo Europa, Los Frailes, Alfredo Di Stéfano, Olimpia, Butarque, and La Cantera). In addition to basketball fields, football fields, athletic fields, gymnasiums, saunas, and swimming pools, these centers also have many other amenities.
Club Deportivo Leganés is the city’s football team currently playing in Segunda División. Leganés has the second-highest number of federated clubs in the Autonomous Community of Madrid after Madrid.
Leganés also has an Official Languages School where residents can study English, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, or Spanish (adapted for immigrants). Madrid residents only pay a fee of €250 per year for any of the languages because the Madrid Government pays the school’s taxes. Some neighborhoods also have cultural centers (San Nicasio, Centro, Zarzaquemada, El Carrascal).
Public health care
Each neighborhood in Leganés has a healthcare center, including the Severo Ochoa Hospital. A lot of attention is paid to mental illness research in the city. The area is also home to a public orphanage, a retirement home, and a disabled center.
Culture
An open-air sculpture museum, the Museum of Sculpture combines prominent representations of Spanish sculpture from the twentieth century to the present. The Minister of Culture, Carmen Calvo, inaugurated the museum in September 2005. Works are displayed at the Prado Museum and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia.
AC/DC is the name of a street in Leganés dedicated to the Australian rock band. During their visit to Leganés, the band inaugurated the highway. After the council decided to paint the street sign on the wall instead of replacing it repeatedly, the sign was frequently stolen. The rock band Scorpions is also commemorated in Leganés with a street.
Leganés’ Parquesur, built in the early 1990s, is one of Europe’s largest shopping centers. 2005 saw a complete renovation and expansion of the building.
Climate
In Leganés, summers are short, hot, dry, and mostly clear, and winters are long, freezing, and partly cloudy. An average temperature of 32°F to 92°F is experienced throughout the year; it rarely falls below 23°F or rises above 98°F.
