Nearly all sides of Legionowo are covered with forests. Legionowo Poviat has a forest cover of 30.6%, while its city limits have a forest cover of 10.3%. Within the district, apart from Serock, is an artificial reservoir called Zalew Zegrzykowski.

Legionowo’s history dates back to the 19th century. In 1877, on the territory of the then estates of Count Potocki, the Jabłonna station of the Nadwiślańska Railway was established. Here, the railway route intersected one of the first roads in Poland, the Kaunas Route. A summer resort named Gucin after Count August Potocki was built by the railway station a few years later (the count’s colloquial name was Gucio). A former summer resort now stands at the heart of Legionowo between Piłsudskiego and Warszawska Streets. During this period, Legionowo was known as Bukowiec (a gamekeeper’s lodge), Kozówka, and Ludwisin. They are now referred to as city districts.

The tsarist military garrison was established at the station in 1892 but on the other side of the tracks. He determined Legionowo’s further history. A balloon branch was established in Jabonna in 1898 as part of the Warsaw Fortress Region. Almost until the end of the 20th century, Legionowo continued the Russian tradition of ballooning. Russian soldiers began to station in Jabonna and Legionowo after August 1, 1914 (since the beginning of World War I). In 1915, the Germans entered the settlement and liquidated the Tsar’s garrison. The Polish crew reestablished themselves in the barracks on November 14, 1918, after being absent for 27 years. The settlement was officially named Legionowo on May 3, 1919.

The town began to flourish in the interwar period. Both the number of residents and the settlement itself increased exponentially. Count Maurycy Stanislaw Potocki parceled out most of his estate in the mid-1920s. In 1921, Charles de Gaulle, the future president of France, stayed in Legionowo. During that same year, the first primary school in Piaski was opened (today, it houses a kindergarten), and a garrison chapel was built. End of the 1920s, the Military Aerological Department of the National Meteorological Institute began operating a military-scientific Aerological Center. Legionowo still has a PIM today. The 1st Squadron was stationed at Legionowo Armored Trains (one of two units of this type in Poland) from the 1920s until the outbreak of war.

• Railway – The Legionowo railway station is located on the route of the international transport corridor E65: Zebrzydowice – Katowice – Warsaw – Gdańsk Gł.
• Bus – In the city and part of the Nieporęt commune (line D1), free bus connections are organized as part of the Free Public Transport in Legionowo, which is entirely financed from the budget of the City of Legionowo.
• Aviation – Legionowo is about 20 km from the Warsaw-Modlin airport and about 25 km from the Chopin airport in Warsaw.
