The city and municipality of León, located in the northwest Iberian Peninsula, is the capital of the province of León, which is part of the autonomous community of Castile and León. In 2019, it had a population of 124,303, making it the city with the most people in the province. There are approximately 200,000 residents in the metropolitan area, including San Andrés del Rabanedo and other smaller municipalities.
León was founded in the 1st century B.C. by the legion Legio VI Victrix, which served under Caesar Augustus during the Cantabrian Wars (29-19 B.C.), the last phase of the Roman conquest of Hispania. It is thought that the Legio VII Gemina, recruited from the Hispanics by Galba, settled in a permanent military camp in 74 A.D., eventually becoming the city’s foundation. The city’s modern name, León, comes from its Latin name, Castra Legionis.
The Romans established the site of the city to protect the recently conquered territories of northwestern Hispania from the Astures and Cantabria and to secure the transportation of gold extracted in the province -especially in the enormous nearby mines of Las Médulas- that was taken to Rome through Asturica Augusta (modern-day Astorga)).
As a means of distinguishing it from the old Legio VII Claudia, Tacitus calls the legion Galbiana; however, no such designation appears on any inscriptions. As a result of Vespasian’s amalgamation of Gemina with one of the German legions, probably Legio I Germanica received the appellation Gemina. There was a Legio VII named Gemina Felix in its full name. Vespasian settled it in Hispania Tarraconensis, after serving in Pannonia and fighting in the civil wars, as a replacement for Legio VI Victrix and Legio X Gemina, typically stationed in the province, but had been withdrawn.
According to the Itinerary, Ptolemy, and Notitiae Imperii, as well as a few inscriptions, its regular winter quarters under later emperors were at León; however, numerous descriptions indicate that a strong contingent of the army was stationed in Tarraco (modern Tarragona), the chief city of the area.
It is possible to see portions of the original Roman encampment in the modern layout of the city. In the Roman world (built between the first century B.C. and the fourth century A.D.), long sections of Roman walls remain standing. Additionally, archaeological exhibitions show the remains of the walls, gates, baths, and theater.
The economic and demographic decline began in the 16th century and continued into the 19th century. For much of the Early Modern period, the city was controlled by a few noble families utilizing regiments and regidurías. By the end of the 19th century, the city’s population had increased from 9,000 to 15,000 people. There was further growth during the 20th century: 18,000 people in 1910, 44,000 in 1940, 73,000 in 1960, and 100,000 in 1971.
León, where the military coup that began the Spanish Civil War took place (and succeeded) on 20 July 1936, met little resistance from the putschist military officers. Throughout history, the Catholic Church has allied with the rebels and has instrumentalized the Catholic sentiment and traditions against the Republic. The rebels expanded from the city to the rest of the traditionally conservative province, which remained under rebel control except for a small part located near Asturias that became part of the battlefront until October 1937. Nevertheless, the Francoists rehabilitated the Convent of San Marcos, the old Santa Ana factory, and the provincial prison to serve as mass detention camps.
Many people moved from rural areas of the province to León during the 1960s, resulting in much growth.
A Köppen climate classification of Cfb indicates an oceanic climate (León), or Csb indicates a warm-summer Mediterranean climate (León). As a rule of thumb, temperatures in winter usually range from 1 °C (30 °F) to 13 °C (55 °F). During the coldest days of winter, frost commonly forms in the early morning, but it usually melts after sunrise. Although snowfalls are not uncommon in the city (9 days per year), they are not usually heavy. The summers are warm and relatively dry, with temperatures generally ranging from 16 °C (61 °F) to 35 °C (95 °F). The city enjoys a considerable amount of sunshine throughout the year, with approximately 2,673 sunshine hours.
A wide variety of Leonese dishes are available. Still, these are the most famous: cecina (cured, smoked beef meat), blood sausage, bouillon (spiced pork intestine stuffed with meat), garlic soup, cocido leonese (a stew with chicken, vegetables, and chickpeas, served after vegetable-vermicelli soup) and mantecadas (pastry). As well as the strong gastronomy of León, tapas are another essential feature of the region. If you get a drink, you usually get a free tapa, which is not the case in other parts of Spain. It is very common to go “de tapas” or “taper,” i.e., to go for a few drinks (“un corto,” which is a little beer, “una caña,” which is roughly half a pint of beer or “un vino,” a glass of wine, or a “button,” a small glass of orange soda) just before lunch but more generally as a light form of dinner.
The province of León is home to places with a rich cultural heritage, such as Ponferrada, Astorga, and León, with its Cathedral and Casa Botines building designed by Gaudí. Additionally, it is a part of the Silver Route and the Way of Saint James.
Located in the south of Spain, León combines stunning historic architecture with an irresistible pulsating energy. One of the most beautiful cathedrals in Spain, its main attraction, but there are so many other things to do.
This geographical location of León means that the Spanish spoken there is the standard form, without influence from other languages.
