Leverkusen Overview

Leverkusen is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany on the eastern bank of the Rhine. To its south, Leverkusen borders the city of Cologne, and to its north is the state capital Düsseldorf. It has a population of around 161,000 and is one of many cities which can be found in this country.

History

The main area of Leverkusen spans from before the 12th century, but the town’s current day heart was Wiesdorf. With the incorporation of surrounding villages in Wiesdorf, not only are the rivers and marshes around it more accessible to go out to, but they also benefit from the improved infrastructure with new roads. In 1571 and 1657 when floods occurred, fewer lives were lost unlike in previous floods as lives were moved back away from flooding rivers.

A large part of Leverkusen was rural until the late 19th century when industry prompted the development that led to it becoming one of the most important cities in western Germany.

Carl Leverkus developed a way to make grey-blue dye using copper. His factory was built near the Kahlberg River in Wiesdorf in 1860. He named it “Leverkusen” after himself, and production began nearby soon after. It started with an 1891 takeover of the plant by the Bayer company and then moved headquarters in 1912 to Wiesdorf. IG Farben took over in 1918, during WWI asset confiscations that followed. The city of Leverkusen was named for its founder Carl Leverkus and was founded in 1930 by merging Wiesdorf, Schlebusch, Steinbüchel, and Rheindorf.

The IG Farben factories were bombed 2 years before, again by the RAF over 2 years, and finally for the third time by the RAF for 1 year.

In 1975, Leverkusen grew to incorporate seven neighboring communities including Opladen, Quettingen and Lützenkirchen. Hitdorf and Bergisch Neukirchen joined in 1930. The city of Münster dates back to the 7th century and is made up of a lot of villages that were originally called Wiesdorf. Opladen, Schlebusch, Manfort, Quettingen, Lützenkirchen and so many more. Münster boasts an interesting history and some beautiful architecture as well.

On July 27th, 2020, a horrific explosion at Chempark in the city killed two people and injured 31 others.

Climate

In Leverkusen, summers are mostly warm and pleasant with mild temperatures, while winters can be cold and bitter with the frequent wind coming through.
