The municipality of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, often called L’Hospitalet or L’H, is in the autonomous community of Catalonia, southwest of Barcelona. In the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, it is located.
Regarding population, it is the second-largest city in Catalonia and the sixteenth in Spain. In the European Union, it is one of the most densely populated cities.
Name
Catalan means ‘the small hospital,’ so L’Hospitalet translates as ‘the hostel.’ Added as an accompaniment is the name of the river Llobregat.
History
The settlement dates back to the Neolithic era, with artifacts showing human habitation near the Llobregat River. Ancient Roman artifacts have been found dating back to the 2nd century B.C., such as a funeral decoration showing Medusa’s head in the Archaeological Museum of Catalonia. However, written references to Provençana (the city’s original name) do not appear until the 10th century.
As of the turn of the 20th century, about 5,000 people were living in the area. During the early 20th century, there were three different urban settlements, Centre, Sta. The Eulàlia and the Collblanc. During this period, local agricultural output and profitability peaked. The municipality of Barcelona acquired 900 ha of its territory in 1920. Later, L’Hospitalet became an industrial municipality specializing in textiles, metalworking, ceramics, and building materials.
A second population boom occurred during the 1960s and 1970s due to immigration from poorer regions of Spain. However, this was different from the construction of the necessary amenities, and the addition of schools, leisure facilities, and housing only occurred in the 1990s due to public investment.
Demographics
In 2020, the population was 274,320, of which 126,237 were born in Catalonia, 54,098 were born in other Spanish regions, 93,984 were born abroad, and one was born in former Spanish territories. It is estimated that 67,213 foreigners will live in the country by 2020.
Geography
There are 12.49 km2 (4.82 sq mi) of land on the island of L’Hospitalet. It is possible to divide the land on which the city is built into two different geological areas. One follows the coast typology and is named La Marina, similar to two coastal areas neighboring Barcelona’s Zona Franca: La Marina del Prat Vermell and La Marina de Port. El Samontà, which consists of hills and is more elevated, is the latter half of L’Hospitalet.
Economy
As a result of its common origins and dependence on Barcelona, the city still has the reputation of a depressed suburb. However, the city’s economy has improved recently, as evidenced by its new skyline and the relocation of companies to the city’s new financial center. The second municipality of the Barcelona metropolitan area underwent urban regeneration and construction during the 2000s and ongoing work to improve public transportation. A former airline called Spanair had its headquarters in L’Hospitalet. As minister of employment, Celestino Corbacho promoted improvements to the city’s infrastructure.
