Begijnhof Lier

founded in the first half of the 13th century for widows and unmarried women, Begijnhof Lier, is one of the oldest religious communities in Lier. There are 162 houses on 11 little alleys in Begijnhof Lier, one of 13 Flemish beguinages listed by UNESCO.

Stadhuis

Lier’s historic town hall is much older than its 18th-century Rococo facade suggests. In 1367, when Lier’s cloth trade was booming, the building was erected as a cloth hall.

Zimmer Tower

Lier-born astronomer and clockmaker Louis Zimmer donated the Jubelklok (Jubilee or Centenary Clock) to the city in 1928 to celebrate Belgian independence’s 100th year.

ZimmerMuseum

The museum was built to house another of Zimmer’s masterpieces, an enormous astronomical clock created for the 1935 Brussels World Exhibition. Over 2,000 kilograms weigh the Astronomical Clock, which is almost five meters tall.

Stadsmuseum Lier

Lier’s city museum opened in 1892 and has a fine collection of paintings from the region dating between the 1500s and 1900s. The museum opened with a significant endowment and was bolstered by another in the 1930s.

Sint-Gummaruskerk

Lier’s eye-catching Brabantine Gothic church was constructed almost 200 years from the 1370s onwards. Almost unheard of for a Belgian church, these windows are part of a more extensive collection of original Gothic and Renaissance stained glass.

Gevangenenpoort (Prison Gate)

 The Prison Gate, built in 1375, is the last remaining gate of Lier’s Medieval inner ramparts. Due to its history as a prison between 1500 and 1930, the building was known as the Prison Tower.

Spuihuis

Located on the closed stretch of the Kleine Nete that runs through Lier just minutes on foot from Sint-Gummaruskerk, is a former lock house.

Vleeshuis

This fine crow-stepped building opposite the Stadhuis is another monument to appreciate on Grote Markt. There has been a guild house here since 1418 for Lier’s butchers, the Vleeshuis. Lier’s cloth hall, a court of justice, and a city prison have all been housed there.

Kinderboerderij ‘t Struisvogelnest

Kinderboerderij ‘t Struisvogelnest is unusual in that it stays open all year long, and there are some animals you wouldn’t expect in the paddocks. It is home to goats, chickens, cows, sheep, donkeys, horses, rabbits, emus, ostriches, alpacas, and a rare woolly pig.
