Limerick has a population of around 250,000 and is the fourth most populous city in Ireland. The largest town by area is Limerick City with a population of around 253,512. Geography and political subdivisions
The merger of the city council and county council created the merger of Limerick City & County Metropolitan District. The district was one of six metropolitan districts proposed for closure by ministers reasons. The Metropolitan District includes the city’s urban area and extends outwards towards Patrickswell in the west and Castleconnell in the east. City suburbs located within county Clare are excluded. Limerick is a city on the River Shannon in southwest Ireland. It was founded by Gaelic monks who lived there around 1000 AD, but it has been important for more than a millennium. The County of Limerick and other areas to its north have been common since Roman times, as have remainders from Viking rule. Its name is first attested in Irish.
Name
“The town of Inis Sibhstane, between Loch Foyle and Loch Boisdale,” is a generic Irish place name meaning “plain in the twilight.” The first part of this name is from the Gaelic name for Lucht (leach) “ridge.” The second part refers to the seven hills that form today’s Dundrum.
The name dates from at least 561, but its original meaning is unclear. Early anglicized spellings of the name are Limnigh, Limnagh, Lumnigh, and Lumnagh, which are closer to the Irish spelling. “Mud [and] moorland” could well mean a place of severe hardship, or almost from the reindeer’s mouth. John Macgregor provides us with a surname in 1618 that does not explain itself: “The most renowned of all Irish surnames is the MacGregor (which signified either “deer. The idea of a “loimeanach” originally referred to a sort of naked marsh in Ireland. It never seems to have been used for anything other than this name. Not only were several people able to helpfully explain the name, but those who did something like this usually have enough understanding of Irish mythology to do so with some dignity.
History of Limerick
The history of Limerick extends back to the early Viking settlement on King’s Island (an island in the River Shannon) and the granting of its city charter in 1197.
King John ordered the building (1200) of a great castle. The city was besieged three times in the 17th century, culminating in the famous 1691 Siege and capture of Limerick. However, underneath the facade of red brick buildings, bustling traffic, and shopping areas, London is a diverse city. Some take it for granted: living amongst thousands of migrants from different countries that you wouldn’t dream to encounter in your community. Others are less cynical and see diversity as something positive. In such cases, almost all settlements are located between four or five hills covered.
Early history
Limerick has a deep knowledge of Irish folklore and history and is a national treasure. William Camden was the most important writer of history in the English language, and his meticulous detail is unparalleled. The earliest provable settlement dates from 681 but history suggests the presence of settlements in the area surrounding King’s Island, the island at the historical city center. In 2015, a map of Ireland with this location indicated as the “Regia” made by Ptolemy was discovered in a rock shelter off the Irish coast. “Limerick was the capital of Ireland and possibly the oldest city in Europe. It is described as having a strong Celtic foundation, and was endowed with many monasteries before being conquered by the Manicheans.” Two major army units crossed the Ardnamurchan and then rode down to the shores of Loch Dublin.
Local government
Limerick City and County Council has responsibility for local services such as sanitation, planning and development, libraries, collection of motor taxation, local roads, and social housing in the city. The council comprises elected councilors, the county (and city) manager, and a CEO. Local elections are held every five years and the councilors each elect a Cathaoirleach or chairperson to chair the council of all 26,790 voters. The 21 councilors who represent the City Metropolitan Area all elect a mayor to represent their areas in the large metropolitan area that includes Dublin. National politics
A similar change is proposed for the constituencies of the European Parliament to represent constituents within the area included in the ‘South West Fermanagh and Armagh’ electoral area. This changed the electoral boundaries from Limerick City to Limerick County and added the city of Limerick to its neighboring county. The Limerick county constituency consists of the whole of the county.
Climate
Limerick’s climate is classified as temperate oceanic (Köppen Cfb). Met Éireann maintains a climatological weather station at Shannon Airport, 20 kilometers west of the city in County Clare. Shannon Airport records an average of 977 millimeters of precipitation per annum, which is approximately on par with Dublin City Centre. Limerick has two distinct seasons: a wintry winter season and a mild summer season. Lomax city has 168 days recorded as no shade, with 47 days of uniformly good or better weather, making it the sunniest postcode in the country, and 107 out of 168 days have sunshine.
