Lleida Overview

Catalonia, Spain’s west coast, is home to the city of Lleida. As the capital city of Lleida province, it is one of the largest cities in Spain.

From a geographical standpoint, it lies within the Catalan Central Depression. Segrià is also the capital and the largest city in the province, as well as the largest city in the region. A population of 137,387 was recorded in 2010, including Raimat and Sucs, contiguous towns.

There are records of settlements in Lleida dating back to the Bronze Age, making it one of the oldest towns in Catalonia. Until the Roman conquest of the Iberian Peninsula, the area was inhabited by Iberians, the Ilergetes. Augustus renamed the town Ilerda, and it became a municipality. Since the 8th century, the Moors ruled the city until it was reconquered in 1149. As a result of its foundation in 1297, the University of Lleida became the third oldest in Spain. The town was damaged by several wars in the centuries that followed, including the Reapers’ War in the 17th century and the Spanish Civil War in the 20th. In the decades since then, the city has experienced continuous urban development, commercial growth, and demographic growth.

Name

Although the Spanish name of the town is Lérida, it is used for official purposes, including Spanish, as Lleida, due to its association with Castilianization under the Francoist regime. In the local pronunciation, the name is, while in the regional pronunciation, it is.

History

Anciently, the city was known as Iltrida and Ilerda and was the chief city of the Ilergetes tribe. The Carthaginians and Romans were repelled by Indibil, king of the Ilergetes, and Mandoni, king of the Ausetanes.

An important place historically and geographically, Hispania Tarraconensis was incorporated into the Roman province of Hispania Tarraconensis under the Romans. This city was built on an eminence overlooking the Sicoris River (modern Segre), the principal tributary of the Ebre, some distance above its confluence with the Cinga (modern Cinca); as a result, it commanded the country between those rivers, as well as the great road from Tarraco (modern Tarragona) to the northwest of Spain, which crossed the Sicoris here.

In 49 B.C., the legates of Pompey in Spain made it the key to their defense against Caesar because of its situation. The Battle of Ilerda, as narrated by Caesar in his own words, is one of the most exciting passages of military history because Afranius and Marcus Petreius threw themselves into the place with five legions. A series of natural events and the formation of the district seemed to favor Caesar’s enemies, but he ultimately prevailed thanks to his skill as a general. Petreius and Afranius capitulated at the end of the conflict. Those who wanted to cast bad luck on someone used the Latin phrase Ilerdam videos due to the battle.

The Roman Empire made Ilerda a prosperous city and a municipium, and the country minted coins. Over the Sicoris was a fine stone bridge (the foundations of the bridge still support a bridge today). In the Middle Ages, the city rose again into importance after falling into decay during the time of Ausonius.

In 1149, Count Ramon Berenguer IV of Barcelona conquered it from the Moors after it had been part of Visigothic and Muslim Hispania.

Until 1717, it was the site of a major university, the oldest in the Crown of Aragon, but Philip V moved it to Cervera nearby. Nowadays, Lleida University has been active again since 1991.

As a result of the Reapers’ War, rebel and French forces occupied Lleida. In 1644, the Spanish conquered the city under D Felipe da Silva.

Lleida was a key defense point for Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War but fell to the Insurgents when their air forces bombed it heavily in 1937 and 1938. Because the Legion Condor aimed for Lleida’s Liceu Escolar de Lleida, the November 2, 1937 attacks became particularly infamous. As a result of the November 2 bombings, 48 children and several teachers were killed, and the town would be bombed and sieged again in 1938 when Franco conquered it.

Despite decades without population growth, the town experienced a massive migration of Andalusians that helped it grow relative to its surroundings. Currently, there are immigrants from 146 different countries living there.

Catalan culture was the year’s capital in Lleida in 2007.

Climate

The climate of Lleida is temperate semi-arid (Köppen BSk). It is mild and foggy during the winter, although cooler than on the coast, while it is hot and dry during the summer. The winter months are usually frosty, although snowfall can occasionally fall, averaging one or two days. An annual average of 369 millimeters (15 inches) of precipitation occurs in April and May, with another peak in September and October.

Transport

  • Railway – Renfe’s Madrid-Barcelona high-speed rail line serves Lleida, Barcelona, Zaragoza, Calatayud, Guadalajara, and Madrid.
  • Buses – Yellow and blue urban buses owned by Autobuses de Lleida.
  • Lleida-Pirineus airport – Only recently, there was no local air transit in Lleida, making it dependent on nearby airports. A new airport was opened in 2010 at Lleida-Alguaire.
  • Future and planned services – A tram-train system is in the process of being approved. An existing but outdated passenger line would connect Balaguer and Lleida, improving inner-city and inter-city public transportation.

Languages

Lleida is a traditionally Catalan-speaking city and province with a distinct dialect (sometimes called Western Catalan or North-Western Catalan, or colloquially lleidatà). Spanish is the primary language of most of the population.

Nightlife

They are known informally as Els Vins, Lleida’s bar and club scene is known for its nightlife. As a result, Els Vins Vells, the most ancient part of the quarter, has largely been replaced by Els Vins Nous, an architecturally more modern and upscale area. Even though there is a bus service on Saturday nights, most prominent clubs in Lleida are located outside of town and can only reach by car.
