Lokeren Overview
In the Belgian province of East Flanders, Lokeren is a municipality belonging to Waasland, also known as Land van Waas, which is the second most important city after Sint-Niklaas.
Toponym
Some authors see the element Luken in the place name, which means (en)close or to close, shut. An eA Lokeren is a closed area between the Durme and a forest area with wild animals more ok en is thought to originate from the Indo-European root word leuk, which means clear or shiny, and the prehistoric hydrodynamic suffix arena, which means water, according to another theory. Although Leuk-arna is linguistically plausible, this theory has yet to have accurate historical confirmation.
History
Archaeological finds on Lokeren territory confirm that this area was inhabited in Neolithic times. A Roman road crossed the Durme river. The Romans named Waasm the Germanic root Wasu, which means “marshy land.” Lokeren, however, makes its first appearance in 1114. Durme’s right bank was chosen as the location for the new village, as opposed to the left bank, which was the location of the older settlements. It had become an independent parish by the middle of the 12th century, with agriculture and flax as its leading economic drivers. Throughout the 20th century, the textile industry remained important.
There have been extensive connections between Lokeren and other settlements and places since its founding. Lokeren’s city center is a significant junction of regional roads connecting it to other vital centers. As a result of these essential roads, branches formed the city center we see today.
During the Middle Ages and into18th the century, Lokeren below entirely belonged to the Count of Flanders. However, the count lent some parts of the city to powerful landowners, such as the lords of Herzele, Kokelberge, and the lord of Beveren, who owned a castle on the left side of the Markt. As a result of the lord selling the land to the city council, this castle was demolished in the early 17th century. On Oudenbos, the Cistercian nunnery was established in the 13th century. Nuns of the monastery led excavations on nearby lands during the ensuing period. As long as the Ancien Régime existed, the sisters owned these lands. During the High Middle Ages, other religious institutions were active on this territory, including Baudelo Abbey, Drongen Abbey, and Ter Hagen Monastery.

Sint-Laurentiuskerk
The church has stood on the east side of Lokeren’s long main market square since at least the 12th century. Baroque in design, the building you see today was built during the 17th and early 18th centuries after its predecessor was mainly destroyed during the 80 Years’ War in 1584.
De Molsbroek
The nature reserve of De Molsbroek is practically on the doorstep of Lokeren to the east. There are 120 hectares of grassland, wet forest, reedbeds, river dunes, and waterlogged forests in De Molsbroek, the largest reserve in the region.
Stadsmuseum
Lokeren’s city museum, housed in a Neoclassical building on the Durme’s right bank, focuses on local lifestyles. Lokeren was a world-leading source of rabbit and hare fur pressed into felt, a key material for hat-making until the 1970s.
Heirbrugmolen
- In and around Lokeren, there were once 47 windmills. A fine tower mill raised in 1852 but stripped of its machinery in 1940 is the Heirbrugmolen.
Stadhuis
The stuccoed city hall was built in 1761 and featured a mansard roof and a curving, helmet-shaped pediment. It faces the Sint-Laurentiuskerk on the west end of the leading market square.
