Lomza Overview

Lomza is a city in north-eastern Poland, about 150 kilometers (90 miles) north of Warsaw and 80 kilometers (50 miles) west of Bialystok. As part of the Podlaskie Voivodeship since 1999, it is located alongside the Narew River. It was previously the capital of the Lomza Voivodeship from 1975 to 1998. Lomza County was founded in 1925 and has been the seat of the RLomzan Catholic Diocese of Lomza since then.

A significant economic, educational, and cultural center of north-eastern Masovia, Lomza is also one of the three major cities of Podlaskie Voivodeship (together with Biaystok and Suwaki). It is the name of the protected area of the Lomza Landscape Park. A brewery is also located in the town called the Omża Brewery.

History

A village called Old Lomza (Stara Lomza) was founded in the 10th century on the site of the current Lomza. The first mention in official records dates back to the 14th century. By the mid-16th century, Lomza had earned its municipal rights and became an important political and economic center. From 1795 until Poland lost its independence, Lomza was a royal city and capital of the Lomza Land, an administrative unit (ziemia) of the Masovian Voivodeship in the Greater Poland Province of the Polish Crown.

A palace there was built by Polish Duke Bolesaw IV the Curly (Polish: Bolesaw Kdzierzawy) in the 12th century. A transit tax exemption on the Narew River was granted to the town in 1444, contributing to its further development. According to legend, Sigismund II Augustus gave Lomza the right to hold big fairs three times a year, like Warsaw and Pocock. In 1614, the Jesuits founded a Jesuit college, which today is the I Liceum Ogólnoksztacce, one of Poland’s oldest high schools. Six years later, an epidemic decimated the city’s population after a great fire destroyed most of the town in 1618. Rapid decline was caused by several disasters (including the Swedish invasion and the Cossack raids).

As a result of the Partitions of Poland, Omża was annexed by Prussia in 1795. During the short-lived Polish Duchy of Warsaw in 1807, it was the seat of the Lomza Department. Congress Poland, which was forcibly integrated into the Russian Empire over the 19th century, took over Lomza in 1815. Polish demonstrations took place in Lomza after the Russian massacres of Polish protesters in Warsaw in 1861, at which even Wadysaw Syrokomla gave a speech in public. Still, they ended in October 1861 when the Russians imposed martial law. As a result, the Polish resistance started preparing for an uprising. The January Uprising broke out in 1863, and many local Poles participated. During the rebellion in Wygoda in July 1863, the Russians massacred 50 unarmed Poles, primary students from local schools. Some victims had their eyes gouged, bones broken, or their insides torn out before dying. Their torture and murder were gruesome. In November 1863, the Russians conducted mass arrests and confiscated Polish property, and many insurgents fled the country. The Russians executed several Polish insurgents in Lomza, one of the sites where hundreds of Poles were deported to Siberia from Katorga. The Poles erected crosses several times at the site of the executions, and the Russians removed them.

Demographics

As of 2021, Lomza has 62,019 residents, making it the third-biggest city in Podlaskie Voivodeship. The population growth in 2006 amounted to 1.3% per 1000 inhabitants, while migration was negative (-520). In May 2008, the unemployment rate was 10,2%. Data from 2006 indicate that the average income per inhabitant was 2,942.31 zł.

Religion

While RLomzan Catholics dominate the population of Lomza, people of other religions have also settled there over the centuries. Many Jewish and Protestant gravestones are located at the Lomza cemeteries, particularly in the abandoned Jewish cemeteries.

Education

The first parish was founded in the early 15th century when education in Lomza began. Jesuits established a Collegium in Lomza in 1614 (currently I Liceum Ogólnoksztacce im. Tadeusza Kociuszki). The rectors of the church included Andrew Bobola. As a result of the pijarom of the KEN school in 1774, the educational level did not decrease. Among the dignitaries who attended Lomza are Szymon Konarski, Rafał Krajewski, Jakub Ignacy Weight, Wojciech Szweykowski, and Adam Chętnik.

There are several public and private schools in Lomza at all levels. Seven primary schools, eight secondary schools, six universities (including three non-public), and two art schools are located in the city. Educated people in Lomza are highly qualified, as shown in the results of the exams and the countrywide lists. For example, I Liceum Ogólnoksztacce is considered one of Poland’s most prestigious schools and among the country’s best.

Economy

Agribusiness and forestry industries are at the forefront of the region’s economic development, closely connected to its natural environment. In addition to the food industry, brewing, electronics, manufacturing building materials and furniture, agriculture, tourism, and agrotourism, the economy is eco-friendly. Podlasie Top One Hundred Entrepreneurs lists several companies with less than 1,000 employees, even the largest ones. Among them, the Łomża Brewery (large-scale producer of beer), DOMEL (producer of unleaded windows), FARGOTEX (importer of upholstery fabrics), Konrad (importer of farm animals), Łomża furniture factory (Łomżyńska Fabryka Mebli), PEPEES (producer of potato starch), and Purzeczko (protection of personal and personal property). In addition, the city is a registered office of the Podlasie Agency for Restructuring and Modernization of Agriculture.

A steady number of 13,408 people were employed by the end of 2007, including 7,170 women. However, the unemployment rate remained at 14.1 percent (as of 2009). Private businesses accounted for 6,280 of the 6,421 registered companies by the end of 2008.

Sports

The first amateur race was held in 1897, marking the sport’s beginning in Lomza. The Lomza Rowing Society was established two years later, and its activities began on January 26, 1902.

On April 16, 1926, the first football club was founded, known as ŁKS Łomża. Having played in the Polish second tier in the 1930s, 1940s, and 2000s, it is the city’s most successful football club.

Athletics, martial arts, volleyball, basketball, and basketball are some of the sports clubs in town. The town’s residents have had great success in athletics, sports fighting, and bodybuilding. The Society sponsors sports promoting physical culture and the Omża School Sports Association. An indoor sports arena opened in 1998 to host national and international sporting events, including indoor football matches and martial arts competitions.

A contract was signed in 2009 for construction of a municipal swimming pool in 2011, the city’s second such facility.
