Lorca Overview

There are 58 km (36 mi) between Lorca and Murcia in south-eastern Spain’s autonomous community of the Region of Murcia. In 2020, the municipality had a population of 95,515, up from 77,477 in the 2001 census. With a surface area of 1,675.21 km2 (646.80 sq mi), Lorca is the second-largest municipality in Spain after Cáceres. Lorca Castle and the Collegiate church dedicated to St. Patrick are two of the city’s attractions.

Lorca was the border between Christian and Muslim Spain during the Middle Ages. A Roman city named Ilura or Heliocroca existed even earlier during the Roman period.

On 11 May 2011, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake severely damaged the city, killing at least nine people. A shallow hypocenter made the earthquake much more destructive than usual for tremors of the same magnitude.

History

According to archaeological excavations, the Lorca area has been continuously inhabited since Neolithic times, 5,500 years ago. Due to its proximity to water, mineral resources, and a natural communication route, the Guadalentn River valley is the site of the earliest permanent settlement in Andalusia. Under the castle and the town, archaeological digs have revealed the remains of a significant Bronze Age population of the El Argar culture.

The Antonine Itinerary mentions a settlement here called Eliocroca, located right on Via Augusta during the Roman period. However, Elicroca would fade under Islam after becoming a bishopric, a suffragan of Toledo’s primatial archbishopric.

A Teodomiro Pact, referring to the place named “Lurqa,” was signed in 713. Under this pact, the area was integrated into an autonomous territory governed by Theudimer (Teodomiro). AFTER HIS DEATH, abb-al-Rahman II, who turned the territory into a Córdoba dependency, carried out a Muslim reorganization of the state until his death. In 1042, Lorca declared independence from the emirate of Valencia, forming the Taifa kingdoms. One of these kingdoms was the Taifa of Lorca. In the first years of its existence, the city was governed by Ma’n Ibn Sumadih, whose power extended as far as Jaén and Baza. Under the Moorish rule, the old part of the town, consisting of narrow streets and alleyways, took its present shape during the Arab period.

Taifa of Murcia conquered Lorca in 1244, after the fall of Almoravid rule in 1228; Fernando III, King of Castilla y León, and Prince Alfonso, the future Alfonso X of Castile, thus reconquered Lorca after the fall of the Almoravids in 1228. In honor of the King, the central tower of the fortress of Lorca was named Torre Alfonsina. During the Arab period, the city overgrew and became the center of a prosperous

The Visigoths and the Moors battled to control Lorca, the city of 100 coats of arms. As a result, they initially owned the land to the north, including Larcia. In later years, the Christians and the Moors controlled the city and the rest of the country until the southern border.

Geography

The town is between Granada and Murcia in eastern Spain at 370 meters (1,200 feet). As part of the hura of Tidmir during the Muslim period, it became well known for its fertile soil and subsoil and its strategic location. In the southwest of the country, it lies on the southern slopes of the Siera del Cano mountain range. The town is located along the Guadalentin River.

In addition to Caravaca de la Cruz, Cehegn, Mula, Aledo, Totana, and Mazarrón in the north, Xulas in the south, and Pulp, Puerto Lumbreras, Huércal-Overa and Vélez Rubio in the east, Lorca municipality is bordered by Caravaca de la Cruz and Cehegn in the east. It is about 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of the coastal town of Aguilas and 58 kilometers (36 miles) southwest of Murcia. European Route 15 (Route A-7) connects Lorca with Puerto Lumbreras in the southwest and Barranco del Prado in the north. It is connected to Caravaca de la Cruz further north by the highway C-3211. Several towns and villages within the municipality include La Paca, Palm Zarcilla, Avilés, Coy, Doña Inés, Don Gonzalo, El Pardo, La Canaleja, and Zarzadilla de Totana.

At 1,676 km2, the municipality covers a large area and is characterized by a range of geographical features, from the coastline to the northwest and northeast mountainous regions. Lorca developed along the Guadalentn River (mud river (al-mud)…) in an arid valley. Central Spain’s Tagus River provides a significant portion of irrigation water. During the Middle Ages, the Moors constructed irrigation channels throughout the country. In the valley, a strip of agricultural plains extends into the western part of the municipality, south of the main town. A mountainous region lies to the north; the Parque Natural Sierra Espuna lies to the northeast.

Climate

Lorca has a warm climate, typical of southeast Spain, with an average annual temperature of 17 to 18 degrees Celsius. The climate characteristics of this municipality are due to its location, which protects it from Atlantic storms. Wet fronts in the west release water when they hit the Betic Cordillera, which separates the Lorca area from the Guadalquivir depression and penetrates the winds of the Atlantic. Most rainfall falls during the fall or spring, with the summers being arid. There are usually mild winters with temperatures below 9°C. It can reach more than 40 degrees Celsius in the summer, but the average maximum temperature in July and August is 31-32 degrees Celsius. The municipality has differences in rainfall and temperature due to its size and topography.

Economy

During the 1960s, Lorca, which had been dominated by a small group of landowners and Roman Catholic religious orders for centuries, experienced sluggish economic growth.

Despite its service industries, it is the commercial capital of the surrounding area. It still depends heavily on agriculture and livestock breeding (pigs, brown cows). Therefore, pork and textile exports are significant contributors to the town’s economy. Saltpetre, gunpowder, and lead-smelting works are also located here. Due to peasant immigration, mainly from Ecuador and Morocco, Lorca’s population has grown recently.

Healthcare

The Murcian Health Service (SMS) manages Lorca’s public health system. As of February 2010, Rafael Méndez Hospital has been accredited by the University General Hospital Accreditation Board.
