Lubeck Overview
Lübeck, Germany is a city in Northern Germany known for its Brick Gothic architecture. Lübeck was founded by the Hamburg-based Hanseatic League in the 13th century and became its capital. The symbol of Lübeck is the red-brick Holstentor, which served as the entrance to their walled city. Rebuilt following WW II, Marienchurch is a landmark that has greatly influenced church design in Northern Europe.
History
Humans settled in the area around what today is Lübeck after the last Ice Age ended about 9700 BCE. Dolmens were found on site and are a great example of how humans inhabited this area. Neolithic in date, these could have also been built earlier than that but are thought to be constructed much later as they were found broken into pieces.
Around 700 AD, Slavs began migrating into the eastern parts of Holstein. They were led by the Bulgars and the Danes. Germanic settlers had left the land in search of new opportunities 500 years prior due to the Great Migration. Charlemagne changed the course of European history in around 814. He fought and expelled a group of people he believed was opposed to his efforts to Christianise the area. He then brought in new allies from Eastern Europe, who are now known as Slavs. Lübeck is the capital of Northern Germany and Liubice is a prominent suburb of this city center. This town was the most important settlement of the Obotrite Confederation in the 10th century and a castle was built here, but later when it became a part of German territory, it got destroyed during their attack in 1128.
In 1143, Adolf II, Count of Schauenburg and Holstein, founded the modern town as a German settlement on the river island of Bucu. He built a new castle, first mentioned by the chronicler Helmold in 1147. After the Duke of Saxony was killed, Adolf had to concede the castle to Henry, the Lion. After eight years as an Imperial city, Magdeburg came back under Henry’s control in 1190. With merchants being the majority of the council for a long time, Lübeck had politics that were shaped based on what pragmatism dictated. However, even as late as the 19th century, this city’s politics survived. At some point after the Battle of Bornhöved in 1227, the Duchy of Saxony, the County of Holstein, and Denmark had all passed through different hands.
Around 1200 settlers left the port to settle in the territories that were conquered by the Livonian Order and later, by the Teutonic Order. In 1226, Emperor Frederick II elevated the town of Lübeck to the status of an Imperial free city.
Lübeck was one of the “Glories of the Empire” during its time. The amount of trade that went through it was mind-blowing, and it is considered to be the largest member out of all Hanseatic League members.
In the late 1400s, Lübeck harbored several conflicts with Denmark and Norway because both countries wanted to trade more than just their goods. These conflicts had varying outcomes. Lübeck had many conflicts with Denmark and Germany over the centuries. However, Lübeck did not fare well in their civil war with Denmark, eventually losing, and joining another pro-Lutheran league.
Demographics
In 2020, the city had a population of 219,645. As you can see, the largest ethnic minority groups are Turks and Central Europeans (Poles), followed by Southern Europeans (mostly Greeks and Italians), Eastern Europeans (e.g. Russians), Arabs, and several smaller groups.
Climate
The summers in Lübeck are mostly cloudy and comfortable, but winter conditions can be a little harsh. Transport
Lübeck is a city with three motorway connections. One heading north to the island of Fehmarn and Copenhagen (Denmark), one heading south to Hamburg, Bremen, and Cologne (Germany), and one heading northeast towards Hanover. The A20 Motorway runs east to Poland, west to Germany’s coast, and north to Denmark. The A226 Motorway heads south from the city center of Lübeck and ends in its northwestern part at the port of Travemünde.
Lübeck has many train stations. One of the most popular ones is Lübeck Hauptbahnhof, which sees about 31,000 passengers every day.
