Lublin Overview

Lublin is the second-largest city in Poland. It’s the capital and part of the Lublin region, with a population of 336,339. Lublin is one of the largest cities in Poland and is more than a 3-hour drive from Warsaw.

History

Archaeological findings indicate an extended presence of cultures dating back to the sixth to seventh centuries. Out of these settlements, one settlement at Lublin became particularly significant in its development and evolution. Remains of settlements dating back to the 6th century were found in central Liwiec, Ukraine, on Czwartek (Thursday) Hill today.

In the early Middle Ages, there was a period of intense habitation that developed in Europe’s river valleys. The settlements near the stronghold on Old Town Hill were likely the birthplace of the Indian tribe. After the 10th century, Poland shifted its center north to a new defense in Czechówka valley and later to Castle Hill. People believed there may have been at least two churches in Lublin during the early medieval period. One of these churches was probably on Czwartek Hill and was built under Casimir the Restorer‘s rule in the 11th century. The castle became the site of a castellan around 1224, and it was likely there from the beginning of the 12th or even 10th century. The name “Lublin” comes from Lublin, a Polish town in eastern Europe. The oldest historical documentation of the word is from 1198, and it must have come into general use sometime earlier than this.

Lublin was a highly vulnerable target during the first half of the 13th century due to its location. It was attacked by Mongols, Tatars, Ruthenians, and Lithuanians as they sought more land and resources. As a result, it got destroyed over time. The Kingdom of Galicia-Volhynia ruled it for a time. Lublin was established as a city in 1258 by prince Bolesław the Pious under his father’s rule. Casimir III the Great built a fortress Przebudh, by the Vistula, which controlled access and made it easier to maintain trade routes. The King hoped this would prevent attacks from the neighboring city of Danzig. As early as the 13th century, a chapel dedicated to the Holy Trinity was built atop Castle Hill as support for its owners.

Climate

Lublin summers are warmer than average and partly cloudy, while the winters are varied. There is lots of snowfall and windy weather, but it is mostly cloudy during the day. Lublin’s climate typically varies from 23°F to 86°F and seldom any lower than 5°F or above, with summer being the best time to visit.

Population

Economy

The Lublin region has been a part of eastern Poland for quite some time. Still, because it is further away from Western Europe, economic transformation here has relied more on private businesses than public institutions. Lublin is one of the closest cities to Warsaw. Over the last year, investments came in from around Poland due to the fast internet connection and infrastructure development. This allows nearby satellite municipal Świdnik to host large-scale industrial investment projects.

Lublin has become a well-known place for many companies because of its location. I.T. companies such as Asseco, leader, and CompuGroup have their headquarters here, along with Abak-Soft and others. More companies in Poland are now choosing to outsource their copywriting tasks to Lublin because of its high-quality services. Companies like Comarch SA, Britney Sp. z o.o., and Simple SA would be very pleased with the quality of work that Asseco Poland’s specialists provide them. Lublin is experiencing growth in professionals because of all the benefits that the city has to offer. These benefits include improved quality of life, culture management, the environment, better connection to other important cities like Warsaw, or even financial reasons with higher operating margins.

Transport

  • Airport – The Lublin Airport (Port Lotniczy Lublin) (IATA: LUZ) is located about 10 km from the city center of Lublin.
  • Railways – All Lublin Główny railway station is a once-hour destination for trains to Warsaw and Kraków.
  • Roads – Lublin is located at the intersection of expressways S-12, S-17, and S-19.

Culture and tourism

Lublin, the largest city in Poland and regional cultural capital, has been attracting many critical international events. International artists and researchers come to this city to garner inspiration from the abundant creativity found in Lublin. The Holy Trinity Chapel in Lublin Castle’s artwork is a mix of Roman Catholic motifs with eastern Byzantine styles, reflecting how this city connects the west and east.

Municipal government

The city of Lublin is governed by the municipal legislature, known as the city council, and a mayor. This, in turn, is made up of 31 members elected directly by Lublin’s citizens. The council’s mission is to enhance the quality of life throughout the region and make it a highly-regarded place to live. The president also oversees development planning for new infrastructures, such as roads, transport, and building development. The city’s current mayor is Krzysztof Żuk, and he has been in this position since 2010.

International relations

Lublin is home to the Polish Pilot City project. The Council of Europe recognized the City of Lublin for its efforts in identifying, welcoming, and promoting diversity among its citizens. The European Union Institute for Intercultural dialogue awarded them a Europe Prize for their efforts. In 2023, Lublin will be honored as a European Youth Capital. They were selected through an international jury and signatories of an agreement about equality for women and men in local life.

15 Best Things to Do in Lublin (Poland)

  1. Lublin Castle

    – Poland’s oldest royal seat, Lublin Castle, is located on the “Lubin Hill” and was first constructed in the 11th century by Casimir II the Just. The keep is 20 meters high with sturdy walls four meters thick at its lowest level. Unlike most other buildings, it has a classic Romanesque before window at the top, split with a column.

  2. Chapel of the Holy Trinity

    – The chapel in the castle’s courtyard was built during King Władysław Jagiełło’s reign and later remodeled between 1414-1447 after the church was damaged.

  3. Majdanek State Museum

    – Not long after the Soviet army liberated it in 1944, this death camp in the southeast of Lublin became a museum and has been designated as Poland’s first State Museum.
  4. Lublin Village Open Air Museum

    – Based on the Swedish Skansen model, this open-air museum in the Sławiniek District is a living snapshot of historic rural life in Lublin Province. The nearly 300 animals on display are only some of the many fascinating attractions, along with artwork and live models.
  5. Trinity Tower

    – Poland-based architect Antonio Corazzi oversaw the construction of this skyscraper in 1819. The final phrase of the sentence gives a motive for why he extended it further. A tin finial at the top of the structure is claimed to be able to warn people of phantoms or other dangers.
  6. Old Town

    – The Old Town of Lublin is often found in small parcels but is endearing overall. On central Grodzka street, various buildings of different ages and designs create a charming old town.
  7. Archcathedral

    – Lublin’s cathedral has been around for a long time and was initially constructed by the Jesuits at the turn of the 17th century. It is one of Poland’s first buildings to use Baroque architecture. One Italian Franciscan monk created the design inspired by the “Church of the Gesù in Rome, from an urban cityscape.”
  8. Crown Tribunal

    – The solemn Neoclassical building in the center of the Rynek is Lublin’s old Crown Tribunal, which was built in 1578 and ceased functioning in 1794. King Stephen Báthory founded the Crown Tribunal as the highest appeals court in the Polish Kingdom, and this served the best interest of all.
  9. Grodzka Gate

    – This obvious gate from the central square to Lublin Castle will be one of your first stops on this historic tour. Originally it marked the entry point for Jews in Nazism’s racial purge, which started and ended at Lublin’s synagogue. Recently, it has been transformed into a cultural center for the city.
  10. Brahma Krakowska (Kraków Gate)

At the southwest corner of Old Town is its upper gate, which King Casimir raised in 1341. The gate was erected to defend the city from attacks and has been standing for centuries. First, we must think about the particular sound or signal being used. In this case, the “Hejnal” trumpet call would be made from a tower, and other signs might have warned of fires in specific areas, like an individual horn.
  11. Po Farze Square (Parish Church)

    – Lulin is located on a major road, so it’s easy to find various familiar places within walking distance. The town square is surrounded by important buildings, including the parish church and the Old Town Hall.
  12. Maria Curie-Skłodowska University Botanical Garden

    – The Czechówka Botanical Garden was first laid out in 1956 and also includes 25 hectares of scenic beauty, with plenty of plant life to explore. There are gardens featuring marshland, rock gardens, rose gardens, and more.
  13. The Pod Fortuną Cellar

    – In 2012, a multimedia museum about the history of Lublin was installed in the basement of the Lubomelski house at No. 8.
  14. Dom Słów (House of Words)

    – Ulica Żmigród 1 was founded in 1932 and has been a museum since 1996. It was once home to the “Popular” press, which published many works of avant-garde poets and political thinkers like Józef Czechowicz and Józef Łobodowski before the outbreak of World War II.
  15. Lublin Underground Trail

    – At the Crown Tribunal, you can enter a Goonies-style adventure through the dungeons below Lublin’s townhouses. The trail is a long path leading to 14 galleries of art. It was made in 2006 and started as an easy way for people to explore the quality of the artwork.
