Lucca Overview
Lucca is located on the Serchio river in Tuscany, Italy. A well-preserved Renaissance wall surrounds the city’s historic center, and its cobblestone streets make it a popular tourist destination. The tree-lined paths along the tops of this massive 16th- and 17th-century ramparts are popular with strollers and cyclists. There is a museum in Puccini’s birthplace, Casa di Puccini.
Toponymy
Luca was the name given to Lucca by the Romans. Recent and concrete toponymic studies indicate that the term Lucca refers to “sacred wood” (Latin: lucus), “cutting” (Latin: lucre), and “luminous spaces” (leuk, a term used by the ancient Europeans). There is an indication that the origin refers to a clearing on a river island of Serchio debris in the middle of a wooded area deforested for light.
History
The territory of present-day Lucca was undoubtedly settled by the Etruscans. Still, there are traces of an earlier Ligurian presence (called Luk, meaning “marsh” by the Etruscans), dating from the 3rd century B.C. Only after the arrival of the Romans did the area take on the appearance of a real town, obtaining the status of a Roman colony in 180 BC and transforming into a town hall in 89 B.C.
In its historic center, a rectangular grid preserves the Roman street plan, while the Piazza San Michele occupies the site of the ancient forum. In the Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, remnants of the theater can still be seen.
Julius Caesar, Pompey, and Crassus reaffirmed their political alliance known as the First Triumvirate at Lucca in 56 B.C.
Early modern period
Lucca remained independent for centuries under a republican constitution (“comune”).
There was a conflict between the French and Austrian armies between 1799 and 1800. After the French gained control in 1801, a democratic constitution was granted. The Republic of Lucca was converted into a monarchy by Napoleon in 1805 when his sister Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi was appointed “Princess of Lucca.”
The duchy was a Bourbon-Parma duchy from 1815 to 1847. Only one reigning duke of Lucca, Maria Luisa of Spain, succeeded by her son Charles II, Duke of Parma, in 1824. During this time, Marie Louise, Duchess of Parma, Napoleon’s second wife, was assigned for life the Duchy of Parma. According to the Treaty of Vienna (1815), when Marie Louise, Duke of Parma, died in 1847, Parma reverted to Charles II, Duke of Parma, while Lucca lost its independence and was annexed by Tuscany. The region became part of Tuscany in 1860, then the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1861, and finally, the Italian State in 1861.

Lucca has short, warm, primarily clear summers and long, cold, partly cloudy winters. Temperatures range from 36°F to 87°F throughout the year, rarely falling below 27°F or rising above 93°F. Visiting Lucca from June to August is best to enjoy hot-weather activities.

Lucca was the birthplace of composers such as Giacomo Puccini, Nicolao Dorati, Francesco Geminiani, Gioseffo Guami, Luigi Boccherini, and Alfredo Catalani. Moreover, it is the birthplace of artist Benedetto Brandimarte. Lucca is home to IMT Lucca, a public research institution and a selective graduate school in the Italian Grand Schools (Superior Graduate Schools).
Education
The Italian superior graduate school system has been represented in Lucca by the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca since 2005. The university’s main educational facilities are on the San Francesco Convent Complex and Campus. Its library is in the former Renaissance-style Roman Catholic church of San Ponziano.
Sports
Founded in 1905, the Lucca Association Football Club has its roots in Brazil, thanks to several fans who had learned the game before helping found the club. The Lucchese 1905, or simply Lucchese, play in Serie C, the third tier of Italian football, having last been in top tier Serie A in 1952. Stadio Porta Elisa is just outside the northeast wall of the city, where the club plays its home games.

Buses – CLAP, or Consorzio Lucchese Autotrasporti Pubblici, established in 1969, manages the local public transportation in the Province of Lucca.

Lucca’s old town is surrounded by a 4.195-kilometer-long wall with eleven bastions and six gates. Flemish engineers built these walls between 1504 and 1645 to protect the rectangular area of the town, which is 12 meters high and 30 meters thick.
Cathedral
Lucca’s cathedral, rebuilt from an earlier church in the 13th century, has a stunning Romanesque facade with arches and delicately carved columns. By the middle of the 13th century, Lombard artisans had decorated the entrance with fine sculptures.
San Michele in Foro
It’s no wonder that San Michele in Foro is often confused with Lucca’s cathedral with its beautiful facade and broad piazza in the historical center of the city.
San Frediano
Built between 1112 and 1147 and dedicated to a sixth-century Bishop of Lucca, the Church of San Frediano originally had the usual orientation with the chancel on the east side.
Piazza Napoleone
Lucca’s main square is bounded on the west side by the Palazzo della Provincia, built on the site of an earlier palace in 1578.
Palazzo Pfanner-Controni
Built in 1667, the Palazzo Pfanner-Controni is located just outside the walls on the north side of Lucca’s old town. It is a harmonious Renaissance masterpiece known for its two-story loggia with a staircase.
Museo Puccini
Giacomo Puccini was born in this house on December 22, 1858, and it is now a museum dedicated to his life and work. Outside, a statue of the composer stands in the Piazzetta, along with posters advertising his operas and musical scores.
Torre delle Ore
popularly known as the Torre dell’Orologio (the clock tower), the Torre delle Ore is the tallest of several towers that mark Lucca’s skyline. You can still see parts of the old mechanism at the top of the building, which has housed a clock since the late 14th century.
