Ludwigsburg is a city in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) north of Stuttgart city center, along the Neckar river. About 88,000 people live in this city, the largest and primary city in the Ludwigsburg district. The district is a part of the Stuttgart Region (Regierungsbezirk), which is part of the Stuttgart Region.
Stone Age and Bronze Age settlements were found in the middle of Neckarland, where Ludwigsburg is located. The city and its surrounding areas are home to several archaeological sites from the Hallstatt period.
Romans occupied the area toward the end of the first century. Around 150, they drove the Limes further east and controlled the region until 260, when the Alamanni occupied the Neckarland. Alamanni grave sites are still found in the city today as evidence of the Alamanni settlement.
Ludwigsburg dates back to 1718–1723 when Duke Eberhard Ludwig von Württemberg built the most important baroque castle in Germany, Ludwigsburg Palace. In 1704, the Duke began building one country home (albeit a palace), originally intended as his only residence. However, he was influenced by the examples of other princes to establish a city to impose his absolute power. A hunting lodge and country seat were added to the baroque palace, called Schloss Favorite (1713-1728), and the Seeschloss (castle on the lake) Monrepos (1764-1768).
Near the palace, a settlement began in 1709, and a town charter was granted on Apr 3, 1718. During the same year, Ludwigsburg became a bailiff’s seat, and in 1938, it became the rural district of Ludwigsburg.
The royal seat of residence switched back and forth several times between Stuttgart and Ludwigsburg between 1730 and 1800. Under Napoleon Bonaparte’s rule, France occupied Württemberg in 1800, and an alliance was forced upon them. Friedrich, the Kurfürst (Prince-Elector) of Württemberg, was crowned king of Württemberg by Napoleon in 1806. Württemberg’s army was raised in Ludwigsburg for Napoleon’s Russian campaign in 1812. Württemberg sent 15,800 soldiers to war, but only a few hundred returned.
The Ludwigsburg garrison became the largest in southwest Germany in 1921. As soon as the Baden-Württemberg municipal code took effect on Apr 1, 1956, Ludwigsburg became a central urban district. Ludwigsburg was originally a Kreisstadt (urban community) in 1945. German garrison towns were revived by the Bundeswehr, Germany’s federal armed forces, in 1956.
With the opening of the Baroque Gallery and the Ceramic Museum in the Residenzschloss Ludwigsburg in 2004, the Residenzschloss celebrated its 300th birthday.
Ludwigsburg’s coat of arms shows a black eagle on a golden banner flying on an oblique red lance on a blue background. As part of the Duchy of Württemberg’s coat of arms since 1495, Duke Eberhard Louis, Duke of Württemberg, awarded Ludwigsburg its coat of arms on Sept 3, 1718 as a Reichssturmfahne. Since it had already been associated with Markgröningen, some minor changes were made to the design. An official message from Ludwigsburg’s mayor’s office in 1759–60 mentions the city’s flag.
A large transformer station Ludwigsburg-Hoheneck was built in 1926 as part of the North-South Powerline. The power lines of Baden-Württemberg cross at this junction to this day.
The first 380kV-powerline in Germany was commissioned between Ludwigsburg-Hoheneck and Rommerskirchen on Oct 5, 1957.

One of the highlights of the Blühendes Barock is the fairytale garden in the Ostgarten (East Garden). The park was created after 1959, when Albert Schöchle, the head gardener, discovered a Dutch fairytale garden near Tilburg.
To control the entrances to Ludwigsburg, Duke Carl Eugene constructed gatehouses along his six-kilometer-long wall between 1758 and 1763.
