Ludwigshafen am Rhein Overview

Ludwigshafen is a city in Rhineland-Palatinate, located on the river Rhine, opposite Mannheim, and is officially called Ludwigshafen am Rhein. As part of the Rhine Neckar Area, it is joined by Mannheim, Heidelberg, and the surrounding region.

BASF, the world’s largest chemical producer, and other companies are based in Ludwigshafen, an industrial city. The Landesphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz is one of its cultural facilities. In addition to being the birthplace and the death place of Helmut Kohl, it is also the name of the city where he was born.

Globalization and World Cities Research Network (GaWC) classified Ludwigshafen as a global city with a ‘Sufficiency’ status in 2012.

History

Celtic and Germanic tribes settled in the Rhine Neckar area in antiquity. The Romans conquered the region in the 1st century B.C., and a Roman auxiliary fort was built near Rheingönheim today.

Ludwigshafen’s future suburbs were founded during the Middle Ages, including Oggersheim, Maudach, Oppau, and Mundenheim. A seasonal flood of the Rhine hindered development in most of the area, which remained swampland.

In the Holy Roman Empire, the Rhine Neckar region was part of the territory of the Prince-elector of the Kurpfalz or the Electorate of the Palatinate. Mannheim, the new capital of the Kurpfalz, had a decisive influence on the region’s development. In parallel to the founding of Mannheim in 1606, Frederick IV, Elector Palatine built a fortress (die Rheinschanze) on the other side of the Rhine to protect the city.

During the Thirty Years’ War and King Louis XIV of France’s wars of conquest in the 18th century, the area was devastated and depopulated.

Only in the 18th century did settlements around the Rheinschanze begin to prosper, benefiting from Mannheim’s proximity. In Oggersheim, the famous pilgrimage church, Wallfahrtskirche, and a small palace serving as the Elector’s secondary residence gained some importance. Friedrich Schiller spent a few weeks in Oggersheim in 1782 while fleeing his native Württemberg.

With the armies of the French Revolution, war returned to Ludwigshafen. From 1798 to 1813, France annexed all land west of the Rhine, including Oggersheim’s palace, Mannheim’s besieged cities, and all the land west of the Rhine. There was a split in the Palatinate Electorate. After the Wars of Liberation (1813-1815), in which the French were expelled, the eastern bank of the Rhine with Mannheim and Heidelberg was granted to Baden and the western bank (including Ludwigshafen area) to the Kingdom of Bavaria. With Mannheim cut off politically from the Rhine, the Rheinschanze lost its role as Mannheim’s military fortress.

Transport

Ludwigshafen does not have an airport but has good connections to several nearby airports. Speyer, Bad Dürkheim, and Worms have small airfields, Mannheim has a medium-sized regional airport, and Frankfurt International Airport is about an hour’s drive away.

Ludwigshafen’s Autobahn (motorway/highway) is excellently connected in all directions. Among the most important roads are the A 650 in the west-east order and the A 61 in the north-south direction. However, A 6, A 65, and B 9 must also be mentioned.

Transport service providers Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr (RNV) and VRN run Ludwigshafen’s public transport system.

Culture

A regionally significant theatre and concert hall, the Pfalzbau hosts various events. An opera production company stages operas 25 nights a year at the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, which maintains its symphonic orchestra. Regional dialect plays are performed in smaller theatres in the Hemshof district.

A museum specializing in ancient and contemporary art, the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum is a municipal art museum. It is famous for the emblematic Miró mural covering an entire façade, known as the “Miró Wall” (Miró-Wand in German). With the collaboration of his long-term colleague, the ceramist Joan Gardy Artigas, the mural is a work of art by the Spanish artist Joan Miró. Since it was installed in 1979, it has been subjected to degradation caused by air pollution.

Ludwigshafen offers several small museums dedicated to the city’s history, including the Stadtmuseum in the Rathaus Center, the Schillerhaus Oggersheim, the K.O. Braun-Museum in Oppau, and the Frankenthaler Kanal Museum.

An Ostasieninstitut (East Asia Institute) is affiliated with the Fachhochschule Ludwigshafen (technical college). Ludwigshafen also has the Evangelische Fachhochschule Ludwigshafen, which specializes in social sciences.

Economy

BASF is Ludwigshafen’s most crucial industrial company, but there are many others. Approximately 90,000 people work in Ludwigshafen’s trade and industry sector, which generates nearly 17 billion euros in annual revenue.

In addition to employing 110,000 people worldwide, BASF has the largest chemical plant in the world at Ludwigshafen, which has 35,000 employees (it was about 55,000 a few years ago). The company produces many chemical substances, including fertilizers, dyes, coolants, and many others. Aside from BK Giulini, Abbvie, Raschig, and Benckiser, other chemical companies with Ludwigshafen plants include BK Giulini, Abbvie, and Raschig. Mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, information technology, and beer (Mayerbräu Oggersheim) are other important branches of industry.

Sports

One of the German cities without a professional football club is Ludwigshafen. As a typical worker’s city, Ludwigshafen has a large stadium, the Südweststadion, built from wartime debris with a capacity of around 40,000. During the past decades, the 1 F.C. Kaiserslautern or Waldhof Mannheim used it as an alternative stadium to host international and some Bundesliga matches.

Ludwigshafen is the hometown of Huddersfield Town left-back Dominik Werling.

At the end of the 2006–07 season, FSV Oggersheim became Ludwigshafen’s most successful football club after gaining promotion to the Regionalliga (3rd Division). In 2010-2011, though, the club was outclassed and withdrew to 11th-tier local-level play as its financial situation worsened.

The highest-class football club in Ludwigshafen, Arminia Ludwigshafen, competes in the Oberliga Rheinland-Pfalz/Saar (V).

An athletics hall was constructed near the Stadium a few years ago.

In the summer of 2010, TSG Friesenheim joined the German first handball division.
