The Roman Empire completed the conquest of the Iberian Peninsula, in the North, by Paullus Fabius Maximus and Lucus Augusti in 13 B.C. on the positioning of a Roman military camp. Lugo was a major pilgrimage center in the Middle Ages, as Santiago de Compostela was during the same period, since the cathedral permitted the public to see the consecrated host 24 hours a day. Lugo was granted the privilege of organizing St. Froilán’s fairs in the 18th century. Lugo had an inevitable dominance during the Modern Age, although nearby towns such as Mondoredo and Ribadeo disputed it. Lugo became the most crucial town in Lugo province after the state was divided into sections in 1833 and provincial governments was created. As a result of the arrival of the first railroad in 1875, the city’s growth has been accelerated.
