The city of Mainz is the capital of Rhein-Main-Area and has its metro line. It’s easy to reach Frankfurt International Airport, which takes only about 25 minutes via commuter rail service.

Mainz is a pretty old city which means that it has a lot of history behind it. This viewpoint is best seen from the Mainz Sand Dunes area which was once an ancient dune but now serves as a nature reserve with rare vegetation and a unique landscape.
While the Mainz legion camp was founded in 13/12 BC on the Kästrich hill, other nearby civilian settlements were erected towards the Rhine. Both historical sources and archaeological findings back up the importance of the military and civilian Mogontiacum as a port city on the Rhine.
History
One of the Roman capital cities founded by Drusus was the precursor to Mainz, which is a city in Germany. The site has a long history starting in the early 1st century and has been used as the imperial capital for a large part of the 2nd century. Even though there are no historical records from Suetonius’s time, it is well studied due to archaeology and other contemporary sources. The city’s name Mainz is not from Main, a river that flows past the site. It is referred to as “Main” or “Moenis” in Latin and comes from where Romans lived. The Celtic origin of the Mainz name is not just evident from linguistic analysis. It also has Roman origins and became one of the most famous cities on Earth thanks to Imperial Rome. The Roman soldiers defending Gallia had adopted the Gallic god Mogons (Mogounus, Moguns, Mogonino), for the meaning of which etymology offers two basic options: “the great one”, similar to Latin Magnus, which was used in aggrandizing names such as Alexander Magnus, “Alexander the Great” and Pompeius Magnus, “Pompey the great”, or the god of “might” personified as it appears in young servitors of any type whether of noble or ignoble birth.
The military town of Mogontiacum was an important site through Roman times because of its strategic position at the confluence of the Main and Rhine rivers. The town continued to grow because it was an ideal marketplace, allowing people to do business with each other. The Castra was home to Legio XIV Gemina and XVI Gallica, XXII Primigenia, IV Macedonica, I Adiutrix and XXI Rapax. The city also became a base of a Roman river fleet, the Classis Germanica. Remains of Roman troop ships (navis lusoria) and a patrol boat from the late 4th century were discovered in 1982/86 and are now on display in the Museum für Antike Schifffahrt. A temple dedicated to Isis Panthea and Magna Mater was discovered in 2000 and is open to the public. The city of Cologne was the provincial capital of Germania Superior and had a funeral monument dedicated to Drusus, which people made pilgrimages to visit. One of the hardest-hit sites was a bridge across the Rhine. The assassination of emperor Severus Alexander happened in 235, though there is another city with that name that is now in Japan.
The Alemanni forces raided the town of Mainz in 369. It was not until about the year 405 or 406 that the Vandals, Suebi, Alans, and other Germanic tribes crossed the river possibly at Mainz. Christian chronicles tell of the bishop, Aureus, about how he was put to death by the Alemannian Crocus. This opened up a way for them to get into Trier and invade Gaul.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the Roman civilization was their military prowess and tactical decision-making abilities. Their castrum never ceased to be a military installation, even when they evolved into changing times, which is truly inspiring. The Citadels are one of the major historical monuments in Rome, but it has also been used throughout its history. For example, during World War II, the citadel served as a secondary defensive position. One interesting site is that of the Cenotaph, which was built in memory of the Drusus troop and honored their sacrifice.
