Mannheim Overview
Mannheim is a city in southwest Germany on the Rhine and Neckar rivers. In the 18th century, the baroque Mannheim Palace became home to historical exhibits and the University of Mannheim. In the grid-like center, called the Quadrate, you’ll find Marktplatz Square which has all sorts of lively attractions. Planken shopping street leads southeast to the Romanesque Water Tower. It is situated in Friedrichsplatz, a park that is divided by art nouveau gardens.
Early history
A brick kiln found in 1929 in the Seckenheim district and producing bricks for about 200 years speaks for the existence of settlements in Roman times.
The first mention of the city’s name was recorded as Mannenheim in a legal document in 766, surviving in a twelfth-century copy of the Codex Laureshamensis that is kept at Lorsch Abbey. The name Mannheim is interpreted to mean “home of Manno”, a short form of a Germanic name. Mannheim remained a tiny village throughout the Middle Ages.
Early Modern Age
-In 1606, Frederick IV, Elector Palatine started building the fortress of Fredericksburg and the adjacent city center with its grid of streets and avenues. On 24 January 1607, Frederick IV gave Mannheim the status of a “city” and granted it privileges equal to that of Heidelberg.
Early 20th century and World War I
– Johann Schütte and Karl Lanz founded the Schütte-Lanz company in 1909, producing 22 airships. Its main competitor was the Zeppelin works.
Climate
Mannheim is one of Germany’s finest regions, with the average temperature in summer rarely falling below 24°C (75°F). In particularly warm summers, as in 2015 when it climbed to 39.8°C (104°F), the surrounding countryside can be exceptionally pleasant. Daytime lows during heat waves can sometimes be even higher than those in northern Europe. For instance, in September 2016, the average temperature in Mannheim was 18.6°C (64° F), the highest in Baden-Württemberg.
The region surrounding Mannheim has a higher humidity and heat index. Snowfall is rare but thunderstorms can still occur in warmer months. Rain usually occurs in the afternoon, during the warmer periods (around average). The climate around here has mild highs and lows, and there is usually enough rain throughout the year. The Köppen Climate classification for this area is “Cfb” (Marine West Coast Climate/Oceanic climate).

Mannheim has been home to the oldest Baseball and Softball Club in Germany for over 100 years. The Mannheim Tornados have won the championship 11 times, more than any other club in German Baseball’s top division.
In 2003, the American football club Mannheim Bandits was founded. As of 2018, their GFL1 games are watched by about 500-900 people each.

Education
Mannheim’s university was one of the first German ones to be founded after the Second World War. The university has a long history, dating back to over 200 years ago with the Palatine Academy of Sciences and the former Handelshochschule, as well as its roots in 1763 with the Palatine Academy for Sciences. A top German university, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München is located in the Palace of Mannheim and was called ‘the Harvard of Germany’ by Die Zeit. It attracts students from all around the world and is known to be the alma mater of many German business professionals. More than 12,000 students were enrolled during the 2013/14 semester.
Besides being a university city, Heidelberg also has one of the medical schools of the University Hospital Mannheim (at Heidelberg University). the Hochschule Mannheim is a branch of the Duale Hochschule of the State of Baden-Württemberg and also a few musical and theatrical academies, including the Pop Academy Mannheim, the Musikhochschule, and Theaterakademie. These institutions draw a large number of students each year.
Mannheim school was attended by military dependents until it closed in 2012. In the 1980s it had 2,200 pupils.
City council
The council has 48 seats and is elected by direct suffrage for five years. In the Baden-Württemberg local elections, voters can choose three, four, or five candidates they want to vote for by using a process called cumulative voting, skipping votes cast in other districts on their ballot. The SPD, except in 1999 and 2004, received more votes than the CDU both before and after World War II. In 2019, for the first time since then, the Greens got most of the votes. The next municipal election will be in 2024.

Mannheim is the 17th wealthiest city in Germany, with a GDP of €20.921 billion.
In the 2019 edition of the Zukunftsatlas, Mannheim ranked 35th out of 401 counties and independent cities in Germany. This puts it among those with “high future opportunities”.
