Maribor Overview

Maribor is an ancient Slovenian city set amid ravines on the Drava River. At Glavni Trg, the old town’s main square, there is a Renaissance-style town hall dating back to 1515. On Grajski Trg square, you will find Mariborsko Pohorje, one of Slovenia’s most popular ski resorts. Up on a hill, in nearby Maribor Castle, there is an extensive History Museum and the Smumar Ceremony Hall.

Name

Maribor is artificial and was created by Stanko Vraz in 1836. He chooses the name in the spirit of Illyrianism and with the idea of Brandenburg (cf.: Lower Sorbian Bramborska). Maribor is one of the oldest Slovenian towns and was known as Mark or Marprog before it became famous for its apple tart, most commonly called by the German name – Apfelstrudel. Besides being known as Maribor in Slovene and Marburg in German, the city has been called “Marburgum” in Latin and “Marburg” in Italian.

History

The oldest known remains of the settlement in Maribor are from around the 5th millennium B.C. With the construction of a bypass, even larger payments were discovered dating from 44 to 42 centuries B.C. New settlements from the same period were located in two towns near Maribor. Spodnje Hoče is one, and another found beneath Melje Hill was another. A fourth settlement was also discovered at Melje Hill and dated back to the 4th millennium B.C.

A more intense settlement in the Maribor area occurred in the 3rd millennium B.C. with the advent of the Bronze Age. In the 13th to 12th century B.C., during the Urnfield culture age, new settlements were found in Pekel. Around 1000 BC, new settlers arrived in the Maribor region. An urnfield cemetery was located when excavations were carried out at present-day Mladinska ulica, and another cemetery was also uncovered in Pobrežje.

The Iron Age and the Hallstatt Culture ushered in an era of new settlements for the time. One such town, Poštela, can be found at 1187 meters above sea level. It was first abandoned in the 6th century B.C. and then resettled again in the 2nd century B.C.

The area that Maribor is located in was once a part of Roman-controlled Noricum, near the border with Pannonia. During these times, wealthy farmers and landowners built their estates known as villae rusticae, which can be seen in modern-day Radvanje, Betnava, and Bohol. The Borova Vas site in the Maribor neighborhood is well known as one of Slovenia’s most important archaeological sites. It’s also significant because it was situated on a major trade route between Celeia and Flavia Solva in one direction and Poetovio and central Noricum in another.

Topography

Maribor Island is the site of the oldest public bath in Maribor, and it’s still an essential and visited place in the city.

There are two hills in Maribor: Calvary Hill and Pyramid Hill. The former is surrounded by vineyards on the southeast side, while the latter dominates the city’s northern border. Ruins from a castle dating back to the 11th century can also be found here, and one of these is also a 19th-century chapel. The hill offers excellent views of Maribor and the countryside to the south over the Drava River.

15 Best Things to Do in Maribor (Slovenia)

  1. Old Vine House

    – This long-lived vine can be found in the Lent neighborhood and is claimed to be the oldest fruit-bearing plant in the world. It has been around for 440 years and grows outside a historic building, which means it needs to be fenced off.
  2. Glavni Trg

    – Your starting point for a quick look at Maribor’s history is the city center square. There will be a few Maribor landmarks like the Town Hall, Plague Column, and former casino.
  3. Water Tower

    – Standing on the Drava, this stone tower used to belong to Maribor’s city fortifications. Once it was no longer needed for defense purposes, the building became a wine cellar – becoming Slovenia’s oldest wine cellar.
  4. Piramida

    – If you want to work off some calories, climbing up Piramida will be a scenic way for you to do so. If you’re a brisk walker, it should take around 30 minutes from the banks of the Drava River to reach the summit.
  5. Maribor Cathedral

    – Many of the features in the nave and chancel are still original, considering that this is an 11th Century building. There are pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and lancet windows, and they’re all rendered in local sandstone.
  6. Plague Column

    – On Glavni Trg, Maribor’s Plague Column is a memorial to the plague that wiped out a third of the city in 1680. The first monument to the plague was erected just a year after the epidemic, and this impressive column has stood guard in Slovenia for over 230 years.
  7. Maribor Castle

    – If you’re searching for the castle in Maribor, you can’t be blamed for walking straight past it. That’s because it looks more like a palace! The building has only had defensive implications in recent years.
  8. Regional Museum Maribor

    – You can get a taste of the lavish decor from the staircase and grand hall – stunning frescoes line the space under a riot of decoration.
  9. Maribor Synagogue

    – As a Holocaust Memorial site, Židovska Ulica (Jewish Street) holds one of Europe’s oldest synagogues. It dates back to the 1300s and is one of the remaining two in Slovenia.
  10. Mestni Park

    – The lower part of Maribor’s central park is inserted into the city’s fabric, with tree-fringed avenues, sculptures, and lawns. It also provides space for many concerts on summer weekends. There’s a pet shop on site that includes an aquarium that accommodates over 120 freshwater and saltwater fish species and a terrarium hosting various reptiles.
  11. National Liberation Museum

-At the start of the 20th century, Maribor lived through some of the most turbulent decades in its history. In the early 1900s, eight out of ten households spoke German and came to WWII. They were a marked target for Nazi oppression and violence.
  12. Viticulture

    – Maribor experiences more than 260 sunny days a year, and the spring and fall seasons are ideal for growing grapes. This tradition is an ancient one with a rich history, and there are plenty of points of contact if you want to know more.
  13. Skiing

    – Located just south of Maribor, Slovenia’s largest ski resort is hoisted up in the Maribor Pohorje range with a maximum elevation of more than 1300 meters. Three distinct areas feature 42 kilometers of ski runs, more than half of which can be classified as blue runs.
  14. Lent Festival

    – The name of this cultural extravaganza has nothing to do with the time of year but refers to the riverfront neighborhood in the old part of Maribor. The festival arrives at the end of June when massive grandstands are erected facing stages on opposite sides.
  15. Drava Boat Trip

    – You could cap off your summer in Maribor with a lazy cruise along the Drava. Your boat, the Dravska Vila, has an observation deck upstairs and a bar below to sip a cool drink while you watch the Lent embankment and its historic monuments scroll past.
