Marijampole Overview
Marijampolė is a city with a history of over 600 years. In the past, it was an important center in Lithuania and nowadays it still holds an important position by manufacturing things from wood, furniture, and machinery. The population of Marijampolė is 48,700 people.
Names
The city has also been known as Marijampolis, Mariampol, Starapole, Pašešupiai, Marjampol, Mariyampole, and Kapsukas.
History
The settlement was founded in 1667 as a village and got its name from the nearby river. The village belonged to the church in the 18th century and then developed into a market town. In 1739, a new village known as “Staropole” was built for guards of Prienai starost in the area and its name was changed accordingly.
Franciska Butler, the wife of Prienai’s contemporary starost, financed a church and monastery for an order of Marian priests. Prienai received a lot of invigorating influence from this new residence and it’s been thriving ever since. It was named “Maryampol” after the Blessed Virgin Mary with the Greek suffix -pol denoting a town.
On February 23, 1792, King Stanislaus II August officially granted Magdeburg Law to the town of Mariampol. It was briefly part of Prussia after the Partitions of Poland, but following WWII it got incorporated into Poland again as a western outpost unwittingly defending against the Soviet Union’s Red Army. The town was transferred to Congress Poland (“Russian Poland”) after the Napoleonic Wars. By the 19th century, it started to grow again, mostly thanks to Polish settlers as well as Jewish and German settlers. Warka became a separate county town in 1817 and grew to 3718 people by 1861. The number of Jews in the town at this time was 3015. A fire engulfed many wooden homes in 1868.
Following the Polish uprising and the Russian suppression of the Commonwealth, Maryampol became seriously impeded. It was also around that time that the monastery rose to prominence as it was the only monastery owned by the Marian Order. One reason why Lithuanian culture was allowed to flourish was because of how much Lithuanians outnumbered the other locals in the town. The proximity to the Prussian border made it easy to smuggle books that were banned in Imperial Russia. During the Lithuanian struggle for freedom, noted scholars and writers engaged in a cultural revival in Mariampol. At that time, Kazys Grinius, Jonas Jablonski, and Vincas Kudirka were at the center of this effort.

Marijampolė can be reached by train from Kaunas and Alytus. It’s also close to 2 major roads, making it easy to get into the city. Helsinki is connected to Central and Southern Europe with the Via Baltica, while other highways go to Kaliningrad and Minsk.
