Marl Overview
Marl is a city and municipality in the district of Recklinghausen in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located approximately 10 kilometers northwest of Recklinghausen near the Wesel-Datteln Canal. About 90,000 people are living there.
Location
There are woodlands in the Haard and a natural park in the Hohe Mark in the north of the town. This town has a smooth transition between the industrial Ruhrgebiet and rural Münsterland. Northern town borders coincide nearly entirely with the course of the Lippe River. Fields, woods, watercourses, parks, and other green spaces cover approximately 60% of the town’s total area.
History
Archeological finds in the district of Sinsen confirm that the town area was populated in the old and middle Stone Ages. Approximately 600 BC is the date of the first settlements.
Invading Germanic tribes expelled Celtic tribes from the area around 300 BC. The Brukterer controlled the area north of Lippe, and the Marser lived south of it. As the Germanic invasion approached Haltern, the Romans built a massive fort to halt it. Between Polsum and Herten, remains of a smaller Roman fort were discovered.
A Roman retreat behind the Rhine River followed the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9AC. During the Germanic period, the area was once again under Germanic control.
In 80 A.C., the Brukterer were expelled by rival tribes and moved to what is now Recklinghausen.
Invasion by the Saxons from the northeast across the Lippe into the former Brukterer area occurred in the Marl area between the 5th and 7th centuries. Archeological excavations in Sinsen in the 1920s proved that the Brukterer built a circular hillfort to defend against the Saxons. Today, the hillfort can only be recognized by experts and is within the nature reserve named “Die Burg” (the castle). Hillforts are considered outstanding historical monuments that deserve protection by archeologists. Before the Late Middle Ages, the hillfort was a protective barrier for the rural population. However, early Middle Ages regional facts were documented at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
Origin of the name
During the Saxon wars, the Benedictine abbey of Werden, founded in 799, first documented Marl in 890. According to legend, a Dagubraht donated his property and income to the abbey in exchange for salvation. Merchlare, a medieval settlement name, is the origin of the name Marl. “Marshy range” or “pond range” are linguistic interpretations of this name. Throughout history, the name changed from “Marlar” to “Maerl” to “Marler” and finally, Marl. In the urbarium, nearby settlements that later became part of the town can also be found. Three of them were called: the “Threviri “or “Drewer,” the “Vrilinctorpe “or “Frentrop, “and the “Haranni “or “Hamm. ” Other great land owners included the Cologne and Xanten chapter, the Essen abbey, some nobles, and Werden Abbey. The Middle Ages were characterized by massive feuds and fighting over scattered property.

Economy
Marl’s largest employers are the “Chemical Park Marl,” the mine “Auguste Victoria,” and the Medienhaus Bauer. Zeche Auguste Victoria, the coal mine at Marl-Hüls, was founded in 1899 and is still in operation today. It was initially planned for the Loremo to be mass-produced in 2010 in a Dorsten/Marl car factory, but now that looks uncertain.
