Marsala Overview
The town of Marsala is located in western Sicily, Italy. The region is known for its ancient ruins, fortified Marsala wine, salt pans, and migratory birds in the Stagnone Nature Reserve. An old shipwreck from the First Punic War can be found in the Baglio Anselmi Archaeological Museum. There is a picture gallery at Grignani Palace and a Flemish Tapestry Museum with pieces dating back to the 16th century.
Geography
The town is located at the extreme western point of Sicily, on Lilibeo Cape, which offers a panoramic view of the Aegadian Islands and the Stagnone Lagoon.
Territory
Marsala’s 241 square kilometers (93 sq mi) territory has a rich cultural and landscape heritage; its area includes the Stagnone Lagoon, a Natural Reserve in which the island of Mozia is located.
As of 1970, Marsala had about 86,000 residents, but a referendum in Petrosino, a village formerly part of Marsala, made the town self-governing.

Climate
Marsala experiences hot summers, moderate winters, and a Mediterranean climate (Köppen: Csa), similar to most coastal towns in Sicily. The weather in Marsala is identical to that in Trapani, a few miles away.
A record high temperature of 37 degrees Celsius (99 degrees Fahrenheit) was recorded in August 2017 during the summer months. There are generally rainy winters and cooler temperatures, with a minimum of 1°C (34°F) and a maximum of 21°C (70°F).
Mythology
The only Argonaut who jumped into the sea was Butes because he could not resist the charm of the Sirens’ singing. Aphrodite saved him and transferred him to Lilybaeum.
History
The Carthaginian army that conquered Selinunte in 409 BC landed and camped near Lilybaeum. It was in 397 BC that the Phoenician colony of Motya, located in Sicily’s southwestern corner, was invaded and destroyed by Dionysius I. The survivors founded the modern-day town of Marsala, a Punic name, also recorded in Greek as Lilýbaion (Λιλύβαιον) and in Latin as Lilybaeum. Between Carthage and Sardinia, it served as a strategic port and a trade center for manufactured goods. Three linked harbors and solid defensive walls were built from the start. Even though it was besieged several times by Pyrrhus of Epirus and the Romans, Punic Lilybaion was never conquered. Over 10 m high and 7 m thick, the walls were eventually built. A second wall 10m from the first wall strengthened them for Pyrrhus’ Siege of Lilybaeum in 278 BC. In the end, he withdrew after two months of siege. As part of his campaign in Sicily, Pyrrhus could not conquer this city.
When the Punic army landed at Lilybaion in 265–264 BC, it marched across Sicily to Messina, where it fought its first battle.
Archaeology
Excavations and topographic studies have been conducted in Marsala’s archaeological area. Located on a low, rocky promontory sloping gently down towards the sea, Lilybaeum was an ancient town with a rectangular land area. A Decumanus Maximus in the 2nd century B.C. and a Cardo Maximus in the 1st century B.C. can be found in the present-day Viale Vittorio Veneto.
During the 1st century B.C. and the 3rd century AD, Lilybaeum was rebuilt twice, according to archaeological findings at Capo Boeo. Despite literature and archaeological discoveries elsewhere showing that other Sicilian towns, such as Selinunte, were affected, there is insufficient evidence to link the latter to the 365 Crete earthquake.
Economy
Wine production still dominates Marsala’s economy, although tourism has also become an essential source of income for the city. Marsala boasts a 14-kilometer (8.7 mi) coastline of sandy beaches and clear sea, as well as the nearby Aegadian Islands and the Saline Della Laguna and Stagnone Lagoon.
Culture
The first large-scale production of wine began in 1773 with the encouragement of English trader John Woodhouse. Ingham-Whitaker, le Cantine Florio, Martinez, Pellegrino, Rallo, Mineo, Bianchi, Baglio Hopps, Donnafugata, Alagna, Caruso, and Minini are important winemaking establishments. Red and white wines are also produced in Marsala cellars. Among the varieties are Alcesti, De Bartoli, Fina, Vinci, Birgi, Mothia, Paolini, e Baglio Oro. The wine was the theme of Marsala’s European Capital of Culture 2012 celebration.
