Near Ilina, Martin is located on the Turiec river, between the Malá Fatra and Veká Fatra mountains. Its population is approximately 54,000, making it the ninth-largest city in Slovakia. The district of Martin and the Turiec region are centered here.
It was part of the Kingdom of Hungary from the second half of the 10th century until 1918. According to written sources, Martin was first mentioned as Vila Sancti Martini in 1284.
Martin suffered many disasters during the turbulent 15th century, including being burned down in 1433 by the Hussites. In just ten years, the town was destroyed again by an earthquake, and Martin gradually became a privileged town under the direct influence of the Révay family.
It became the center of Turóc county in the 18th century.
In the 19th century, the town became Slovakia’s most important cultural center. The city was the site of the establishment of several cultural institutions (such as the Slovak National Museum and the Slovak Matica). During the 19th and early 20th centuries, most political activities leading to the Slovak national emancipation were organized in or from Martin. This was also the time when the town began to industrialize. 1869 marked the establishment of the first printing works, 1890 marked the establishment of the Tatra nábytok furniture factory, and so on.
After Pressburg (today’s Bratislava) became the capital of Slovakia in 1919, the town lost some of its importance. Slovak Matica and the Slovak National Library are housed here today.
On August 24, 1994, it was declared that Martin was the center of Slovak culture.
A United Nations Public Service Award was awarded to the city of Martin in 2011 for its efforts to prevent and combat corruption in the public sector.
