Mataro Overview
In the province of Barcelona, Catalonia Autonomous Community, Spain, Mataró is the capital and largest city of the Maresme region. It is located 30 kilometers (19 miles) north of Barcelona along the Costa del Maresme, between Cabrera de Mar and Sant Andreu de Llavaneres. There were 122,932 inhabitants in 2010, according to the census.
History
Mataró dates back to Roman times when it was called “Iluro” or “Illuro.” Recently, the ruins of a Roman bath house from the first century B.C., known locally as Torre Lauder, were discovered. Via Augusta, the original Roman road follows the path of the coastal N-II highway.
A royal decree declared Mataró a city even though its population fell short of the requirements when it was established (nineteenth century).
Peninsular Spain’s first railway was the Mataró – Barcelona line, opened on 28 October 1848 by Catalan businessman Miquel Biada. Between L’Hospitalet de Llobregat and Maçanet-Massanes, this line runs on the Renfe/Rodalies de Catalunya R1 suburban service. As well as being connected to Barcelona and Girona by the C-32 freeway, Mataró is also connected to Granollers by the C-60 freeway.
Mataró was the starting point for the marathon events during the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.
Agriculture
In the nineteenth century, Phylloxera devastated the traditional vineyards, which were only partially replanted due to the development of irrigation and the growth of tourism. Potatoes were one of the first replacement crops introduced, especially the Royal Kidney variety, and Mataró gained a Denominació d’Origen in 1932. Peas and Trocadero lettuce are also grown, mainly for export. Cut flowers are less critical in Maresme than in other towns. The municipality had 10.57 square kilometers (4.08 square miles) of agricultural land in 1986, of which 9.13 square kilometers (3.53 square miles) were irrigated.
Mourvèdre is a red grape variety that has become better known in modern viticulture as a synonym for Mataro, the Australian and Spanish grape variety. According to legend, Mataró, the city, is where Mataro, the wine grape, originated.
Climate
Summers in Mataró are short, warm, humid, and mostly clear, while winters are long, cold, and partly cloudy.
Temperatures typically range from 39°F to 84°F throughout the year, rarely falling below 32°F or rising above 89°F. It is best to visit Mataró between late June and late August if you are interested in hot-weather activities.
