Minden Overview
Minden is a medium-sized town in the northeast corner of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, the largest city between Bielefeld and Hanover in population. Minden-Lübbecke is the capital of the district (Kreis) of Minden-Lübbecke in the region of Detmold. Located along both sides of the River Weser, the town is crossed by the Mittelland Canal, which traverses the river on the Minden Aqueduct.
Minden served as a diocesan town from 800 AD until 1648, as the imperial capital of the Prince-Bishopric of Minden since the 12th century, and as the capital of the Prussian territory of Minden-Ravensberg until 1806 when the Holy Roman Empire ended. From the Congress of Vienna until 1947, Minden served as the capital of the East-Westphalian region. Additionally, Minden was a significant military base with fortifications from the 15th century until the late 19th century, and it is still a garrison town today.
With its diverse industry, Minden is not dominated by any one branch. Since 1847, the town has been the terminus of one of the oldest German railway lines and is connected to a harbor, federal roads, and a nearby highway junction.
Location
North Rhine-Westphalia’s federal state of Minden is in the northeastern part. River Weser crosses the town in a northerly direction. Five kilometers (3 miles) north of the Porta Westfalica gap, where the Weser leaves the Weser Uplands and flows into the North German plain, the town center is located on a plateau on the west side of the river. A small stream called the Bastau flows into the Weser near the town center from the west. A table divides both the upper and lower towns and marks the border between two ecological zones between the Middle Weser Valley and the Lübbecke Loessland.
Geology
The Wiehen Hills escarpment extends over 100 kilometers west of Osnabrück to the Porta Westfalica gap in the Weser Hills range. Overlapping cretaceous sediments create the hill of Bölhorst, and tertiary layers make up the remaining escarpment horizons. Paleozoic material from the Devonian to the Permian underlies the underground basis. The Wiehen Hills near Haddenhausen are commonly known as the “Monster of Minden,” a new dinosaur genus has been discovered, the Wiehenvenator.
Climate
Winters in Minden can be long, very cold, windy, and mostly cloudy, but summers are pleasant and partly cloudy. Temperatures typically range from 31°F to 75°F throughout the year, with rare temperatures below 17°F or above 87°F. Minden is the best place to enjoy warm-weather activities from mid-June to early September.
History
Between the 1st and the 4th centuries, Minden was part of the Weser-Rhine Germanic development sphere. This part of Westphalia was the focus of Roman military operations in Germany (12 B.C. – A.D. 16). Whether Publius Quinctilius Varus started marching from the Minden region to the Teutoburg Forest in 9 A.D. from that military camp has been a matter of discussion. It is also doubtful that the Battle of Idistaviso or the Battle of the Angrivarian Wall, both in 16 A.D., took place in Minden or its neighboring town Porta Westfalica. However, no definitive archaeological evidence has yet been found for these locations. About 3.5 kilometers (2.2 miles) south of Minden, in Barkhausen, relics of an ancient Roman military camp were discovered in 2008.
An army assembly held by Charlemagne in 798 is the first time “Minda” is mentioned in the Royal Frankish Annals. It is believed that the so-named settlement existed on the left bank of the river, where Fischerstadt now stands. A permanent German army camp and a royal estate were suspected of having been located directly adjacent. The routes from the south were bundled by the Porta Westfalica gap, connected with a west-east way parallel to the Wiehen and Weser hills, and crossed the Weser at a ford. In Minden, one of the seven dioceses founded by Charlemagne under the emperor’s rule, a bishopric was established in 800. Near the older village was built the first cathedral. As a constitutional territory of the Holy Roman Empire, the Prince-Bishopric of Minden became sovereign after 1180 with the dissolution of the Duchy of Saxony. Both the papal supporters and those of King Henry IV nominated two bishops at the same time in 1080 during the Investiture Controversy.
Religions
- Protestant – Between 1521 and 1529, Minden underwent the Reformation. Currently, there are six Protestant parishes in the town: St Mary’s, St Martin’s, St Mark’s, St James’, St Peter’s, and St Simeon’s. They are all part of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia’s Church District (Kirchenkreis) of Minden.
- Roman Catholic – Due to the Peace of Westphalia, Minden Cathedral remained in possession of the Catholic church. The small number of Catholics in Minden steadily increased during the 19th century, and after World War II, the number of expelled persons, working migrants, and refugees increased.
- Other Christian Communities – Other Christian communities include the New Apostolic, the Mormons, and Jehovah’s Witnesses. Many German immigrants from Russia and Central Asian countries belong to Baptistic or Mennonite communities.
- Jewish – Minden has been home to a Jewish community since 1270, which grew to 400 members in the 19th century. Today (2020), there are 85 Jewish community members following World War II. As a result of the November pogrom that occurred on November 9, 1938, the Minden synagogue was destroyed. It is the center of the Jewish community, and a new temple was erected near the old one in 1958.
- Muslims – Minden’s Muslim community has grown considerably over the last half-century, with three mosques.
Coat of arms, flag, motto
The coat of arms shows a double-headed imperial eagle (Reichsadler) of the Holy Roman Empire, awarded in 1627 by Ferdinand II for supporting the town during the Thirty Years’ War. As part of the Prince-Bishop’s coat of arms, the left side shows the crossed keys of Saint Peter, patron of Minden Cathedral.
Red and white are the colors of the Hanseatic League flag. The town’s motto, Ius et aequitas civitatum vincula (Law and justice bind the town together).
Sport
Approximately 25.000 people are members of more than 100 sports clubs organized in a municipal sports association (Stadtsportverband), covering a wide range of sports. Since 1966, the Handball-Bundesliga has been played by GWD Minden, Germany’s most successful handball club. A new “Kampa-Halle” has been built for GWD.
Due to its location on the Weser and the Canal, Minden is a famous water sports center for swimming, canoeing, kayaking, and rowing. The major water sports festival, “Blaues Band der Weser,” is organized every other year by many organizations.
Transportation
- Rail and bus – Hanover-Minden and Hamm-Minden railways connect Minden to the Rhine-Ruhr region, Amsterdam and Berlin, and the secondary Weser-Aller Railway between Minden and Nienburg. Local and express trains, such as Intercity-Express and InterCity, stop at the railway station.
- Roads – The town is near the Autobahn A 2 from Berlin to the Ruhr and the A 30 from Amsterdam to Frankfurt. Minden is connected to Nienburg and the next A 2-junction in Porta Westfalica by federal roads 61 and 65.
- Waterways and harbors – The Weser-Mittelland Canal crossing is among the most important inland waterway junctions.
- Bicycle – Two long-distance cycling routes pass through the town: the Weserradweg along the Weser River from Hann.
Economy
In the neighboring region of Lower Saxony, Minden is the district’s economic center. Along the A 2 Autobahn lies within an agglomeration corridor extending from Minden to Herford, Bielefeld, Gütersloh, and eventually the Ruhr region. The region has approximately 3,300 firms and 40,000 employees in normal conditions, with good transportation connections by railway, highway, federal routes, and waterways. A variety of economic sectors are located in industrial areas in the west and east of the town, including the chemical, metalworking, electronic, paper, ceramic, and woodworking sectors.
Education
All types of general-education schools are available in the town. At present (2022), there are eleven elementary schools (ages 6 to 10), three secondary schools (ages 10 to 16), and five secondary schools with upper-level education (ages 10 to 19). The city has two comprehensive schools, three gymnasiums, a Freie Waldorfschule (age 6 to 18), and two vocational colleges. Adults could obtain the Abitur through the Weser-Kolleg, which provides access to university education.
The Minden branch of the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschule Bielefeld) offers architecture, construction engineering, technology, engineering and mathematics, social studies, business, and health courses. It is located on the Campus Minden, the former Wehrmacht artillery barracks site. As one of the study locations of the University Hospitals of the Ruhr-University of Bochum, the Medizin Campus OWL is adjacent to the Johannes-Wesling-Klinikum. 2022 marked the start of the RailCampus OWL, a cluster of universities, enterprises, and the German Railway for education and research in railway systems.
In cooperation with Hille, Petershagen, Porta Westfalica, and Bad Oeynhausen, Minden offers a Folk high school (Volkshochschule) and musical education in a municipal music school.

Minden Cathedral
