Moers Overview

Moers is a German city on the left bank of the Rhine, near Duisburg. It belongs to the district of Wesel.

History

The county of Moers, which was first mentioned circa 1186, became an independent principality within the Holy Roman Empire.

A popular city in the south of the Netherlands, Maastricht, is known for alternating between Spanish and Dutch rule during both sides’ war with Guelders. Many of the territories that used to belong to the Dutch Republic were lost during the war, but Maurice of Orange managed to retain control until it too was lost. Its distance from Upper Guelders means it hasn’t been brought into what’s now known as the Dutch Republic despite being under Dutch rule.

All Dutch forces and civil servants were expelled after the death of William III of Orange in 1702. King Frederic I of Prussia then took over the county, including its capital city, Moers.

1795 – what was then the Electorate of Hanover was annexed by France. 1815 – after the Congress of Vienna it returned to Prussia, and in 1871 it became a part of Germany.

A target of the Oil Campaign of World War II, the coal mine Rheinpreussen synthetic oil plant in Moers was partially dismantled post-war.

Sports

Moers Sports Club (volleyball) was established in 1985. They captured the 1989 Bundesliga championship.

City council

The City Council governs the city alongside the Mayor. The most recent city council election was held on September 13, 2020.

Population

104,529 (2016)

Climate

The summers in Moers are warm and partly sunny and the winters can be very cold, windy, and mostly cloudy. The temperature throughout the year typically ranges from 33°C to 75°C and is not cold enough to go below 20°F or hot enough to reach 86°F. The best time to visit Moers for warm-weather activities is from mid-June to early September.

15 Best Things to Do in Moers (Germany)

  1. Moerser Schloss

    – The city’s castle is first historically mentioned by the Counts of Moers in the 1100s. Maurice, Prince of Orange refurbished it in the 17th century. The castle would have been hard to capture because it was isolated in a mountain valley on an island between marshlands.
  2. Grafschafter Museum

    – The museum of the castle is specialized in its history, noble families who lived there, and daily life from the past. There are 19 rooms to explore, with the largest being the Rittersaal which has wooden paneling and tapestries from 17th century Europe.
  3. Schlosspark

    – Frederick the Great had destroyed the fortifications surrounding this castle 150 years ago, but in 1801 Heinrich Wintgens made it his private home with some alterations to the castle and its ramparts.
  4. Halde Rheinpreußen

    – The Halde Rheinpreußen has been around for decades and is one of the most impressive spoil tips in the world. It’s made up of over 100 meters worth of mining waste from pit 5/9 at Rheinpreußen mine, which makes it stand out so much. Artist Otto Piene, a former member of the ZERO group, designed a tower that stands 28 meters tall as a tribute to this industry.
  5. Schlosstheater Moers

    – Those who enjoy the arts and speak German have a chance to visit the castle’s vaults, which have housed a theatre since 1975. The Schlosstheater theater boasts its entrance and seats up to 150 people yet remains a fairly small theater with plenty of cultural worth.
  6. Turmmuseum in der Repelener Dorfkirche

    – The old church in Repelen has been proven to be one of the seven oldest in Germany. According to historians, the current architecture originates from a 12th-century Romanesque basilica, completed with a slightly later Gothic choir.
  7. Obere Wassermühle

    – Water has always been a vital part of Moers, evidenced by the moat that was there to defend it. When the city was at peace, this moat would be drained with the help of a lock system – though, during times of attack, flooding could occur and those meadows adjacent to the city would become impassable.
  8. Stadtkirche Moers

    – The church’s most well-known name is ‘Het Stadhuis’ and it served as the city’s main church for almost 500 years. In 1607, a fire destroyed most of the town but we’re lucky enough to have been rebuilt by Maurice of Orange.
  9. Freizeitpark

    – The Freizeitpark is a great place to get active in Moers. This park, which was landscaped on the banks of the Moersbach in 1960, has plenty to offer for people who are looking for some kind of activity.
  10. Jungbornpark

    – This park was founded by Emanuel Felke, a big name in healing. He set it up in 1898 and the citizens of Repelen funded it as a space for him to practice homeopathy.
  11. Felkemuseum

    – If you’re interested in learning more about Emanuel Felke, you can find a museum dedicated to him at the park. Inside the exhibits are panels with information on his life as an evangelical pastor and his independent way of thinking.
  12. Peschkenhaus

    – The Peschkenhaus in Moers is a listed building and well worth a detour. Although newer than it seems, parts of the house are from the 1400s making it the oldest townhouse in the city.
  13. Kolonie Meerbeck

    – There’s a lot of industrial heritage that you can see in Moers. You can visit this beehive settlement, which dates back to the mining era when Moers was a mining town. Back in the day, only 200 people were living here but now there are over 6,000 inhabitants.
  14. NiederRheinroute

    – Germany’s longest bike route goes through Moers. The NiederRheinroute is a signposted network that follows low-traffic routes and there are plans for an extension to Basel.
  15. Duisburg

    – One of the world’s largest inland ports can be found less than 10 kilometers east of Moers. It is now a cultural and entertainment quarter, but no fewer than sixty sailing steamships lined up at its Inner Harbor to load and unload their cargo more than a hundred years ago.
