Mönchengladbach Overview
In North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, Mönchengladbach is a city. The city is halfway between Düsseldorf and the Dutch border, west of the Rhine.
Name and origins
Known initially as Gladbach, the city is still often referred to by that name today. It took the name München-Gladbach in 1888 to distinguish it from another town of the same name (the present Bergisch Gladbach). München Gladbach (short: M. Gladbach) was written without a hyphen between 1933 and 1950. Since this spelling could imply that Gladbach is a borough of Munich (München in German), the name was changed to Mönchen-Gladbach in 1950 (and subsequently to Mönchengladbach in 1960) to avoid confusion.
Gladbach Abbey was founded in 974, and the town was founded around it. In modern times, it mainly ran underground and was named after the Gladbach, a narrow brook. It was in the 14th century that the abbey and its surrounding villages became a city. Nearby, Mönchengladbach is the town of Rheydt.
Early history
Approximately 300,000–400,000 years ago, Homo erectus and Neanderthal remains were found in Mönchengladbach. Ancient cairns from the Neolithic and Bronze Ages can be found here.
By 974, Gero, the Archbishop of Cologne, and his companion, the monk Sandrad of Trier, had built the Gladbach Minster and founded an abbey.
MarketThe monks built a market for the church in the 12th century to improve the settlement. In the vicinity of the market, artisans settled. Gladbach received its town charter between 1364 and 1366. A stone town wall was constructed by the “town” and was maintained by its citizens. Old fortified towers can be found on Waldhausener Hill, as well as remains of the wall at Geroweiher. Within the duchy of Jülich, the city belonged to the department of Grevenbroich until the end of the 18th century.
One day before the fortress Jülich had been handed over to the French, the French revolutionary army marched into the town on 4 October 1794. As a result of the Treaty of Lunéville in 1801, the Holy Roman Emperor Francis II ceded the left bank of the Rhine River to France. The abbey was closed at this point, and the monastery closed. The sanctuary was completed by 31 monks on 31 October 1802. A massive abbey library, well known outside Germany, was scattered or destroyed.
During 1798-1814, the Mairie Gladbach was part of Canton Odenkirchen, the Arrondissement Krefeld, and the Roer Département.
Recent History
After joining the Kingdom of Prussia in 1815, Gladbach became the seat of the Landkreis Gladbach, which dissolved in 1929. In 1815 Gladbach became the seat of the Bürgermeisterei (Office of Mayor), divided into two parts in 1859: the City of Gladbach and the Office of Mayor Obergeburth. In 1907, the region was renamed München-Gladbach-Land.
Rheydt was an independent city from 1933 to 1975; it was split from München-Gladbach by Joseph Goebbels, who was born there. Upon reunification with Mönchengladbach, the central station (Rheydt Hauptbahnhof) kept its original name, making Mönchengladbach the only city in Germany with two rail stations called Hauptbahnhof.
RAF Bomber Command bombed Mönchengladbach on the evening of 11 May 1940 in response to the German invasion of Belgium on 10 May. The bomber crews attempted to intercept German troop movements on roads, intersections, and rail lines, especially in the city’s railyards. Three out of 36 twin-engine Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers were shot down, and approximately half hit their targets. In addition to the British woman who lives in Germany, four others were killed on the ground.
A new state was formed in 1946 after the Prussian Rhine Province was dissolved after World War II, and the city became part of it.
Economy
Local government and representatives founded the Mönchengladbach Business Development Corporation (WFMG) in 1997 as part of the successful diversification of the business location. WFMG and the University of Applied Sciences Niederrhein have developed a five-pillar model for the future orientation of the business location. Among the leading industries for Mönchengladbach’s economic future are textiles and fashion, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering, logistics, the creative industry, and the health sector. The WFMG has partly implemented this cluster policy by establishing its networks.
Santander Consumer Bank, headquartered in Mönchengladbach’s city center on Aachener Straße, is the largest employer in the city.

Chocolateier Heinemann is known beyond the city limits for his cakes, pralines, and baked goods, which he offers in local cafés, Düsseldorf and Munich. Additionally, there are beer breweries in Mönchengladbach. At the site of the former Hannen brewery, the Oettinger brewery produces beer. At the former spring of the river Gladbach in Waldhausen, the Hensen brewery has been producing lower Rhine-type Altbiers since 2015.
Transport
Mönchengladbach Hauptbahnhof and Rheydt Hauptbahnhof are the two main stations in the city, resulting from the merger of the two cities, in which the deprecated name for Rheydt Hbf has never been permanently removed. There is a discussion of extending the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn further westwards to connect the city with Düsseldorf and Hagen. The town of Mönchengladbach is served by several regional trains, including regional line RE13 to Venlo in the Netherlands. It was the largest city in Germany without regular long-distance service by the end of 2009. A new schedule for 2010 added a twice-weekly InterCity/Intercity-Express connection to Mönchengladbach.
Düsseldorf Mönchengladbach Airport is also located in the city.
Under the VRR transport association regulations, the NEW-AG is responsible for local bus and rail transportation.

- Football – There is a long tradition of football in Mönchengladbach. One of the country’s most popular, well-supported, and successful teams is Borussia Mönchengladbach.
- Field hockey – Three international world championships have been held in the city: the 2006 Men’s World Hockey Cup, the 2008 Women’s Hockey Champions Trophy, and the 2010 Men’s Hockey Champions Trophy.
